Here at The Mandatory Training Group, we are fully aware that the internet is now playing a huge part in most people’s lives in the UK and across the world. Have you considered online training but perhaps you are worried that it may not be for you or maybe you don’t have computer skills? The Mandatory Training Group provides basic literacy, numeracy and computer skills for free for those who require them. We fully understand that classroom training is not for everyone. Many health and social care workers have huge responsibilities and busy work and social lives. Online training will be a suitable alternative for healthcare and social care professionals to upskill while they work. The Mandatory Training Group’s online learning platform provides health & social care providers with an efficient and cost-effective solution.
Here at The Mandatory Training Group, we receive calls from many health and social care providers asking, 'what is online learning and how does it help our organisation?'
There is no clear definition of online learning. It is sometimes referred to as 'online training'; 'online courses'; 'E-Learning'; 'E-Learning'; 'learning'; 'computer-based training'; 'computer-based learning' among many other variations. Online learning may refer to:

E-Learning is not to be confused with online machine learning. Educational technology is defined as "the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources". Many healthcare and social care providers are now using educational technology to deliver online learning for workforce development, including online mandatory training courses.
Contact our London-based Support Team to try our free e-learning courses and mandatory training courses online.
Educational technology involves the use of both educational theoretics and physical hardware. It encompasses several domains, including learning theory, computer-based training, online learning, and, where mobile technologies are used, m-learning. The development of educational technologies as online learning systems includes:

Our learning technologists have helped the Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulated healthcare and social care providers to implement online-based statutory and mandatory training in their organisations, including

ELearning is a type of learning that utilises electronic or computerised technologies to access learning/educational curriculum outside the traditional classroom setting. E-Learning usually refers to a course/training program or a certificate, diploma or degree that is completed entirely online. Many UK independent training providers, further education colleges and universities are now using e-learning to deliver most of their courses and support practical/classroom-based training.
Why not call our UK based support teams to register for your free blended learning account? Your staff can access free online training courses to meet CQC compliance requirements for healthcare and social care organisations.
Here at The Mandatory Training Group, we have been contacted by many health and social care providers wanting to understand what e-learning is and how it works. There is also confusion with other terms that are used to describe learning that is delivered online, via the internet. Many healthcare and social care providers are now increasingly using eLearning to supplement classroom mandatory and statutory training for their staff.
Contact our Leeds based team to find out how your organisation can benefit from E-Learning for healthcare and social care providers. You can also try our free mandatory and statutory courses online.
ELearning may sometimes be referred to as 'distance education', to 'computerised electronic learning', 'online learning', 'internet learning', 'online training' and many others. The Mandatory Training Group defines e-Learning as training or courses that are specifically delivered via the internet to somewhere other than the classroom where the teacher is teaching. E-Learning is increasingly being used by healthcare and social care providers in the UK to deliver statutory and mandatory training online to their staff. Try our online health and social care courses today for free.
Many health and social care training providers are now using E-learning systems to deliver statutory and mandatory training courses online. Using interactive e-learning materials and recorded lectures, the trainer or tutor is in most cases available to interact/communicate with learners and grading their participation, assignments, tests and assessments. In the UK healthcare and social care sectors, E-Learning has been proven to be a successful method of delivering training and education to NHS and other healthcare professionals.
Join our growing numbers of NHS Trusts and other healthcare providers across the UK who are benefiting from our interactive eLearning courses. You will be able to assign our free online courses to your staff and benefit from our free blended learning environment.
In the early days of e-learning, some people were concerned that bringing computers into the classroom would remove the human element that many learners benefit from.
E-Learning has been in use in the UK health and social care sectors for over 20 years. During the early days of its use, many health and social care providers were concerned that online training would remove the human elements that come with the traditional classroom training format that had been in use. During this time, most of the induction training, statutory and mandatory training refreshers and updates were delivered using the classroom format over a period of 3 to 5 days. However, with our free e-learning platform for NHS Trusts and other healthcare providers, you will be able to minimise the costs of your classroom training.
There is no agreed definition of blended learning. Simply put, blended learning is a formal or non-formal education program that combines the traditional classroom teaching methods with online digital media, including e-learning and online learning materials. Blended learning requires both the physical presence of a teacher and student, with some element of student control over time, place, path, or pace of the learning. "Blended learning" is sometimes used in the same breath as hybrid learning, "personalized learning", mixed learning, integrative training and differentiated instruction.
Contact our UK based teams to find out how your organisation can benefit from our free CARE LMS blended learning solutions for healthcare and social care organisations.
The Mandatory Training Group are the leading UK provider of blended learning solutions for health and social care providers. Our online statutory and mandatory training courses combine face-to-face classroom practices with interactive online learning resources. We also provide blended learning solutions to various sectors in partnership with professional development and training settings, including continuing professional development (CPD). Our free blended learning solutions can help health and social care professionals such as doctors, allied health professionals and health & social care support workers to meet their statutory and mandatory training requirements.
Blended learning is more than just adding computers to classrooms. It aims to bring a fundamental change to the way learners and teachers/trainers interact and enhances the learning experience. Blended learning is more than just a trend. In the early 2000s, less than 100,000 learners were using this method, and there are now over 5 million learners using this approach across the UK. Many health and social care providers have taken advantage of blended learning to improve the training experience of their staff; cut costs of training and allow flexibility. Statutory and mandatory training for healthcare and social care staff is well suited for blended learning.
The combination of online training and traditional classroom training has vastly changed the delivery of health and social care training. Even further education colleges and universities across the UK now use blended learning to deliver health and social care courses, degrees and post-graduate learning. Instead of the traditional role of a 'teacher' or 'lecturer', most health & social care institutions now use the term 'facilitator', whose role is to guide learners between the classroom and online-based learning. Online learning in health and social care has enabled the empowerment of students with the essential skills and knowledge required to make the most of the online material and independent study time, work-based placements/assessments and guiding students towards the most meaningful learning experience possible. Health and social care facilitators focus on the following key areas:
The Mandatory Training Group has built strong partnerships with high-quality training providers, and health and social care providers to the interactive online course.
The Mandatory Training Group provides various types of E-Learning, including:
E-Learning has many benefits for health care and social care providers. The Mandatory Training Group supports many NHS Trusts and other health & social care providers to implement E-Learning either on its own or to complement their in-house classroom or work-based training. This is particularly important for mandatory and statutory training to meet CQC requirements and ensure that their staff provide the best possible care to their patients, residents or service users.
The combination of online learning and classroom training is both cost-effective and saves time. In most cases, online training minimises the time that NHS staff, nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals take away from the frontline and direct patient care. In addition, e-learning also saves on travel costs to and from classroom training, as well as doing away with printing handouts and other learning materials. Online learning also helps health and social care providers to save money and increase workplace morale and productivity. Health & social care staff who are happy and focused on their work are more likely to improve patient care and meet CQC requirements for hospitals, care homes and domiciliary care workers. Health care and social care employers can also enhance their staff's personal and professional development opportunities. Call our Coventry-based Support Team to find out how we can help your organisation save money and improve care with our interactive statutory and mandatory training courses online. Our free e-learning courses are available for all NHS staff and other healthcare professionals to meet their CPD requirements.
The Mandatory Training Group's interactive online learning portal is available for health and social care professionals to access is any time of the day, 24/7, from anywhere and using any electronic/computerised device. One of the key benefits is that healthcare and social care workers can complete their statutory and mandatory training courses online, at a time suitable for them with minimal disruptions to their clinical work. With huge budget cuts and shortage in the NHS, private hospitals and care homes, this brings huge benefits to health and social care providers and their staff. Nurses and NHS health care staff can now complete their CPD learning as well as mandatory and statutory training courses online. On completion of each mandatory training course, doctors, nurses and health care staff can download their CPD accredited certificates, save them or print them to show that they are compliant with current UK legislation and regulatory requirements.
Many health and social care compliance managers ask if they can track the progress of their staff when they complete statutory and mandatory training courses. Tracking learner progress is essential for health care and social managers for audit purposes and also to prove to the Care Quality Commission (CQC) that their staff have completed the necessary mandatory and statutory training courses online.
Online learning is discreet and suits well those health and social care professionals who may feel uncomfortable learning in a large group. Using our interactive CARE LMS, health and social care workers can learn online at their own pace, either in the office or in the comfort of their own home. Our CARE LMS has many interactive features and tasks that help learners to gain a thorough understanding of each module.
Of course, we at The Mandatory Training Group understand that nothing is perfect and computers can't do everything or suit all healthcare and social care staff. Some health care and social care subjects, for example, resuscitation, first aid or basic life support and safe moving and handling of people are better delivered in a classroom setting where nursing and care staff can be assessed in a practical environment. Some subjects, for example, drug calculations for nursing staff also require extensive testing and scenarios to simulate real-life environments. However, the theoretical aspects of practical healthcare subjects can be delivered effectively through online learning.
Considering the high risks in health and social care environments, The Mandatory Training Group only works with industry professionals to develop meaningful online learning materials that meet the high standards of care expected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
The Mandatory Training Group provides interactive online statutory and mandatory training courses for all staff working in health and social care environments, including:
Most staff working in health and social care sectors can use our interactive e-learning portal to complete theory parts of the training through our e-learning portal, then get signed off for the practical aspects in the work setting. Our CARE LMS, therefore, provides blended learning opportunities for health and social care organisations. Contact our Warwickshire based Support Team to find out about our interactive e-learning courses and other online training programs.
A learning management system (LMS) is a software system that is used to administer, document, track, report and deliver educational courses and programs or training programs online. Learning management systems allow teachers/trainers to deliver learning materials to learners, test their knowledge through various assessment tools, track their progress online and store online learning records for audit and compliance purposes. These functions are essential for health care and social care providers because they are required by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to keep records of statutory and mandatory training for their staff. Online learning records are well suited for healthcare and social care organisations for their CQC compliance requirements and to show commissioners that their staff training is up to date.
The Mandatory Training Group’s CARE learning management system facilitates the delivery of online learning for NHS Trusts, general practices (GP surgeries), care homes, domiciliary care agencies, locum agencies for doctors and healthcare professionals, nursing agencies and other health and social care recruitment agencies. Our CARE LMS is well suited to provide online courses, facilitate blended learning with existing classroom training courses. Health and social care providers can integrate our CARE LMS with their existing learning technologies, e.g., training management systems to supplement instructor-led classroom training or other Learning Record Store systems to store and track learning data using our cloud-based e-learning system.
Contact our West Midlands-based Support Team to see how our CARE LMS can help you manage your online learning and mandatory training requirements.

Online mandatory and statutory training involves completing the training required by law to do your job safely using a computerised device. Online mandatory training is sometimes referred to as computer-based training (CBT), home-based learning, distance learning, e-learning, e-learning, e-learning or online training. Essentially, online mandatory training takes place using a computerised device such as desktop/PC, laptop, tablet or mobile phone. In most cases, health and social care professionals will need the internet to complete their mandatory and statutory training online. However, The Mandatory Training Group’s CARE LMS can be accessed through mobile phone apps and can also be installed on your organisation’s local intranet.
Our CARE LMS provides online statutory and mandatory training courses using various multimedia formats, including visual graphics, audio clips, video simulations and demonstrations, and web-links that provide additional learning resources online. Our health and social care training team are always developing new courses and programs to meet Care Quality Commission and other regulatory requirements. Register today to receive updates relating to new CQC requirements and free healthcare and social care mandatory training courses.
Here at The Mandatory Training Group, we receive many enquiries from health and social care providers relating to statutory and mandatory training requirements. Many regulatory and professional organisations, including the Care Quality Commission (CQC), General Medical Council (GMC), Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and others have issued guidance for nurses, doctors, allied health professionals and health & social care staff.
Our Support Team often get asked the definitions and differences between statutory and mandatory training for healthcare and social care staff. We will now define these terms and explain the differences in the context of healthcare and social care in the UK.
Statutory training is the training required by law or where a statutory body has instructed an organisation/sector to provide that training on the basis of specific legislation, for example, the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (MHSWR 1999). Health and social care providers often describe statutory training as ‘essential training’ or ‘compulsory training’, It is the responsibility of health and social care employers to ensure that all their staff have the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain a healthy and safe working environment for themselves, patients in their care and their colleagues.
In NHS Trusts and other health and social care providers, all new employees are required to undertake induction training that includes core health and safety at work, risk assessments, organisational and personal responsibilities. Statutory health and safety training includes:
As part of their inspection of health and social care providers, the Care Quality Commission looks at each organisation’s recruitment processes. This includes how organisations look for new health and social care staff, essential checks such as references and criminal history. The Care Quality Commission inspectors also check whether new staff have been provided with induction training, including the statutory subjects listed above. Most NHS Trusts and other health and social care organisations usually provide their new staff with induction training within the first month of starting work.
In addition, it is essential for health and social care providers that all their staff are up to date with any changes in the legislation and regulations. This is usually done by ensuring that all staff complete their statutory and mandatory training sessions that were not covered in your induction within the first year of employment. In most handbooks provided to staff by NHS Trusts and other health and social care providers, it states that attending and keeping up to date with statutory and mandatory training is compulsory for all staff.
Mandatory training is compulsory training that is determined as essential by a health/social care organisation for the safe and efficient delivery of their services. Mandatory training is designed to reduce organisational risks, improve that safety of staff and service users and comply with local or national policies, regulatory and professional guidance. Many healthcare and social care organisations use the terms ‘essential training’ and/or ‘compulsory training’ as a ‘catch-all’ to cover both statutory and mandatory training.
Mandatory training requirements depend on specific job roles and the nature of service provided. However, the Care Quality Commission expects most health and social care providers to cover the statutory and mandatory training courses listed in the UK CSTF.
The list of mandatory training courses is not exhaustive. Each health/social care provider has to carry out a needs assessment and determine which mandatory training courses should be completed by their staff.
In general, healthcare and social care staff should complete statutory and mandatory training during work time. In some cases, NHS Trusts and other employers may require their staff to attend mandatory training or updates/refresher training whilst off duty. In such cases, they should offer their staff equivalent time off to compensate. For those health and social care staff who work regular night shifts, their employer should take this into account to ensure that they attend any regular training updates and keep up to date with their statutory and mandatory training requirements. This is where online health and social care mandatory training may be beneficial.
Any work related training (whether mandatory, statutory or other health and social care courses) is counted as 'working time' under the Working Time Regulations 1998. All time taken for training should be calculated as part of the employees’ working hours.
Following the initial induction training, it is essential that all health and social care staff attend annual updates and other refresher training in line with their job roles and to meet the requirements for the service provided by the organisation.
The Care Quality Commission, HCPC, GMC and NMC do not set specific requirements for mandatory training that should be completed by NHS staff and other health care professionals. However, CQC and the healthcare professions professional bodies require all NHS staff and private sector healthcare workers to keep up to date with the necessary training and remain competitive. All healthcare and social care professionals should follow the protocols and policies set up by their employers regarding mandatory training.
There are currently many frameworks under which employers may use to determine their needs and deliver mandatory training. For example, the NHS is required to meet the better health standards, Care Quality Commission inspection criteria and NHS Resolution risk management standards. More recently, most NHS Trusts, and other health and social care providers, including locum and nursing agencies are now using the Skills for Health Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF). Mandatory training frameworks will vary depending on:
All agency nurses, locum doctors and other healthcare professionals, temporary and bank staff should complete appropriate mandatory training for their specific job roles. In most cases, all locum doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and healthcare assistants are expected to complete mandatory training courses that are completed by permanent staff. If you are not sure which mandatory training courses apply to you, please contact the bank/temporary staffing office or the locum agency that employs you for advice. In general, all agency nurses, locum doctors and other health and social care professionals are expected to complete mandatory training that is aligned with the Skills for Health Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF). Common mandatory training courses for agency and locum workers include:
Unlike permanent staff, locum staff, agency and temporary/bank workers do not have the statutory right to request ‘time to train’ or paid time off to study.
In general, locum doctors, allied health professionals, agency and bank nurses should receive mandatory training from their employers. In most cases, they usually need to self-fund any further career development and to gain the required continuing professional development (CPD) hours/points for revalidation. The Mandatory Training Group is the leading UK provider of online statutory and mandatory training for NHS Professionals (bank only flexible workers), agency nurses, locum doctors and other health and social care professionals. Our Coventry-based health and social care training team often get asked: “What is the difference between statutory and mandatory training?” Both mandatory training and statutory training are compulsory. However, statutory training is the training that is required by law, while mandatory training is the training deemed by an organisation to be necessary to deliver safe and effective care. Health and social care staff who have received adequate and appropriate statutory and mandatory training are better positioned to identify and mitigate risks in the workplace, follow local policies and procedures and meet the regulatory requirements and national guidelines. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) checks whether health and social care organisations have provided their staff with relevant statutory and mandatory training courses. Learning outcomes of mandatory and statutory courses should meet the relevant legislative and regulatory requirements.
Professional organisations for health and social care professionals, e.g. the Royal Medical Colleges, Health Care Professions Council (HCPC), General Medical Council (GMC) and the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) provides mandatory training guidance for nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, doctors and medical locums. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and the British Medical Association (BMA) have provided guidance and explained the differences between mandatory and statutory training. Mandatory training requirements may vary depending on health and social care services provided and the specific job role and responsibilities of each employee.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) does not dictate or provide lists of mandatory training courses that should be completed by health and social care professionals. There is an expectation that each health and social care provider should assess their needs and determine which mandatory training courses should be completed by their staff. However, the CQC can take regulatory action if health and social care providers fail to meet the Regulation 18 requirements. Regulation 18 states that all healthcare and social care staff must receive support, statutory and mandatory training and personal development necessary for them to work safely. Health and social care professionals who have completed mandatory training courses previously should undertake annual training updates or refresher training to ensure they have the skills, knowledge and understanding of changes in legislation and regulatory directives. Annual refresher mandatory training intervals will vary depending on the organisational requirements and specific job roles.
The Skills for Health’s UK Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) was developed to provide guidance for healthcare and social care organisations. The CSTF provides guidance, learning outcomes and mapping tools to ensure that all providers follow a unified framework and minimise variations in the quality of training between NHS providers and the private sector. The CSTF also helps to minimise unnecessary duplications (staff doing the same training with different providers), improve the quality of training, track learner progress, improve quality and consistency and standardise mandatory training across all UK countries and regions.
Mandatory training can be delivered face to face using the classroom format or online using a learning management system (LMS). Many health and social care organisations have their own internal training teams that deliver mandatory training and other courses relevant to their staff. Classroom mandatory training can cover both theoretical and practical subjects. Over the past decade, NHS Trusts, private hospitals, recruitment and agencies and other health and social care providers are now increasingly asking their staff to complete mandatory training online. The Mandatory Training Group provides mandatory training to NHS staff, private healthcare organisations, care homes and county councils around the UK. In most cases, health and social care providers are able to provide the majority of mandatory training courses online. This includes core mandatory and statutory training modules such as:
The theory courses for manual handling and resuscitation can also be completed online. Health and social care staff can then complete the practical assessments using the classroom format at a training centre or in-house classes.
Individual health and social care professionals and managers can register online for our free mandatory training courses for healthcare & social care providers. All free statutory & mandatory training courses are available in shortened versions, with additional learning materials available online. These 'all in one day' mandatory and statutory courses can be completed in one sitting, or start and stop when it suits you.
NHS Trusts, private healthcare providers, locum medical & nursing agencies and procurement frameworks are now insisting that all statutory and mandatory training courses should be aligned to the Skills for Health's UK Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF). All our free mandatory training courses for healthcare & social care providers are aligned with the Skills for Health CSTF. Other social care courses are aligned to Skills for Care, Care Certificate and the requirements set out by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for healthcare and social care providers.
