This course is suitable for healthcare and adult social care workers who provide direct patient care, including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and health and social care support staff, who need to be proficient in basic adult and paediatric life support.
This course covers all the learning outcomes recommended in the CSTF guidance and Resuscitation Council UK recommendations.
On completion of Level 1 basic life support, the learner will:
- Recognise cardiorespiratory arrest.
- Know how to summon immediate emergency help according to local protocols.
- Start CPR using chest compressions.
- Locate and operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
In addition to the Level 1 outcomes, the learner will:
- Understand national guidelines and local resuscitation policies and procedures specific to adult basic life support.
- Recognise and respond to patients with clinical deterioration or cardiorespiratory arrest, escalating care in line with local policy.
- Initiate an appropriate emergency response, including managing choking and applying the recovery position, in accordance with Resuscitation Council UK guidelines.
- Perform effective chest compressions and maintain lung ventilation as per current guidelines.
- Provide basic airway management to ensure an open airway.
- Safely and effectively operate an AED.
- Understand the responsibilities of healthcare professionals in emergencies, including accurate reporting and recording of events.
- Recognise the limits of personal resuscitation capabilities and apply the Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR) policy within the clinical context.
In addition to the Level 1 outcomes, the learner will:
- Understand national guidelines and local resuscitation policies specific to paediatric care.
- Recognise and respond to children showing signs of clinical deterioration or cardiorespiratory arrest, escalating care in line with local protocols.
- Initiate appropriate emergency responses, including the management of choking and the application of the recovery position, aligned with Resuscitation Council UK guidelines.
- Provide basic airway management for paediatric patients.
- Perform and maintain effective paediatric chest compressions and lung ventilation as per current guidelines.
- Safely and effectively use an AED on paediatric patients.
- Understand the individual roles and responsibilities in responding to paediatric emergencies and accurately report and record the details of the event.
- Apply the DNACPR policy or anticipatory care decisions within the clinical context.
The course covers a range of critical topics necessary for effective resuscitation:
- National and local guidelines - In-depth review of Resuscitation Council UK guidelines and local policies.
- Clinical deterioration - Early recognition of clinical deterioration in both adult and paediatric patients.
- CPR techniques - Hands-on practice in chest compressions and lung ventilation for both adults and children.
- AED operation - Comprehensive training on the correct selection, placement, and operation of AEDs.
- Choking management - Techniques to manage choking, including back blows and abdominal thrusts.
- Recovery position - Practical application of the recovery position to ensure airway protection and prevent aspiration.
- Simulated resuscitation scenarios - Simulations to practice learned skills under real-life conditions.
- Ethical considerations - Understanding DNACPR and patient autonomy in resuscitation efforts.
