What is NMC Revalidation?

NMC revalidation is mandatory for registered nurses and midwives in the UK and nursing associates in England to maintain their registration with the NMC. This is an ongoing process that healthcare professionals must engage in throughout their careers. To ensure they are up-to-date in their practice, fit to work, and committed to delivering high-quality care, healthcare professionals must complete the revalidation process every three years.

Our platform provides a seamless way to keep track of your requirements, ensuring you stay compliant and focused on providing the best care possible. ComplyPlus™- NMC revalidation makes managing your revalidation needs simple and efficient.

Importance of NMC Revalidation

The importance of NMC revalidation is to ensure continuous professional development, enhance public trust in healthcare, and foster reflective practice for better patient outcomes, all registered nurses and midwives must stay current with best practices, maintain high professional standards, and provide quality care that aligns with the NMC code. Completing the revalidation process is essential to meet these standards.

ComplyPlus™- NMC revalidation simplifies managing your NMC revalidation, helping you stay compliant and focused on delivering quality care.

When should you revalidate?

You should complete the revalidation process every three years, aligning with your registration renewal date. This ensures that you maintain your registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and continue practising legally in the UK.

  • Your revalidation date is the first day of the month in which your registration expires.
  • The NMC will notify you 60 days before your revalidation application is due, sending a reminder to the email address you have registered with.
  • You must submit your revalidation application before the first day of the month in which your registration expires.
  • Preparing for revalidation well in advance is advisable, ideally throughout the three years. This includes keeping records of your practice hours, continuing professional development (CPD), reflective accounts, practice-related feedback, and reflective discussions.

What does NMC revalidation require?

You must meet several revalidation requirements to prove that you keep your skills and knowledge up-to-date, ensuring safe and effective practice for your NMC revalidation. These include:

  • 450 practice hours are required, or 900 hours if renewing two registrations (e.g., as both a nurse and midwife).
  • 35 hours of CPD, including 20 hours of participatory learning
  • Five pieces of practice-related feedback
  • Five written reflective accounts
  • Reflective discussion
  • Health and character declaration
  • Professional indemnity arrangement
  • Confirmation.

FAQs

What is the role and purpose of the NMC?

The NMC sets standards of education, training, conduct, and performance so that nurses and midwives can deliver high-quality healthcare throughout their careers. The NMC ensures that nurses and midwives keep their skills and knowledge up to date and uphold our professional standards.

Can I revalidate if I'm not currently practising?

Even if you're not currently practising, you can still revalidate with the NMC. The process entails demonstrating that you've met practice and professional development standards over the past three years. This includes maintaining practice hours, engaging in CPD, and providing reflective accounts. Meeting these requirements is essential for successful revalidation and maintaining your NMC registration.

How often do I need to revalidate with NMC?

NMC revalidation occurs every three years, coinciding with your registration renewal date.

How long does UK NMC verification take?

NMC aims to process the application within 60 days once they have received all required documents. When everything is completed, you will be invited to take the OSCE exam in your assigned UK hospital.

What happens if I don’t meet the revalidation requirements?

Loss of registration - Your registration with the NMC will lapse, meaning you will no longer be legally allowed to practice as a nurse or midwife in the UK.

Inability to work - Without NMC registration, you won't be able to work professionally, which could impact your employment status and income.

Re-application process - You may need to go through the re-application process to regain your registration, which can be time-consuming and may involve additional requirements.

Professional implications - Failing to revalidate on time can affect your professional reputation and relationships with employers and colleagues.

Why is it important to revalidate?

Revalidation gives patients, the public, employers, and other healthcare professionals greater assurance that licensed doctors are current in their practice and fit to work.

Why is reflection important in nursing NMC?

Reflection on practice is crucial for both students and registered professionals, serving as a key component of NMC revalidation. It aims to nurture self-awareness and understanding, fostering continuous improvement in practice.

Why is it important to adhere to the NMC code?

The Code contains a series of statements that taken together signify what good practice by nurses, midwives and nursing associates looks like. It puts the interests of patients and service users first, is safe and effective, and promotes trust through professionalism.

What is the difference between revalidation and re-registration?

Each year a nurse is required to submit an annual payment to NMC to maintain

registration status. Revalidation occurs every 3 years and requires all nurses to

submit evidence to remain on the register.

Can I use my Mandatory Training as evidence of CPD?

You can only use mandatory training if it is directly related to your scope of practice

as a nurse or midwife. For example, fire or health and safety training should not be

Included. Only mandatory training that is necessary to your scope of practice and professional development as a nurse (for example, CPR or safeguarding training) should be included.
