Celebrating the power of giving back
Each year, Volunteers’ Week is a powerful reminder of the time, energy, and dedication that millions of individuals give freely to support others. Taking place from Monday, 2 June to Sunday, 8 June 2025, this annual campaign celebrates the diversity and impact of volunteering across the UK.
Coordinated by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), and backed by countless charities, social enterprises, and community groups, Volunteers’ Week is a chance for us all to reflect on the vital role that volunteers play - not only in delivering essential services, but also in creating more connected, inclusive, and resilient communities.
Honouring our volunteers
While the official theme for 2025 has not yet been announced, the spirit of the week remains clear: recognising, celebrating, and inspiring volunteers of all backgrounds. From health and social care to youth support, the environment, and emergency response, volunteers are often the unseen force behind some of the most impactful community efforts.
These are the people who deliver food parcels to those in need, offer a listening ear to someone experiencing a mental health crisis, plant trees in local parks, support NHS staff in hospitals, and give their time to shelters, schools, and support centres. Many volunteers go above and beyond without asking for anything in return - except the satisfaction of knowing they’ve made a difference.
The impact of volunteering
Volunteering not only supports those on the receiving end but also benefits the volunteers themselves. Research has shown that volunteering can improve mental well-being, reduce feelings of loneliness, develop new skills, and enhance employability. In an increasingly fast-paced and disconnected world, volunteering gives people a sense of purpose and belonging.
Moreover, the collective impact of volunteers is immense. In the UK alone, it is estimated that over 16 million people volunteer regularly, contributing billions of pounds to the economy and immeasurable value to society. Volunteers are a cornerstone of our civic life.
Ways to get involved in Volunteers’ Week 2025
Whether you’re an organisation, a current volunteer, or someone new to volunteering, there are countless ways to take part in this year's celebration:
Recognise and thank volunteers
Whether you’re an organisation, a current volunteer, or someone new to volunteering, there are countless ways to take part in this year's celebration:
Share volunteer stories
Inspire others by highlighting real-life experiences. Share testimonials, social media posts, or short videos that shine a light on the incredible work volunteers are doing in your community.
Host or attend events
From coffee mornings and street parties to open days and workshops, events during Volunteers’ Week help bring people together and promote community engagement.
Promote volunteering opportunities
If your organisation works with volunteers, this is an ideal opportunity to advertise available positions, recruit new members, and host information sessions for prospective volunteers.
Collaborate with local organisations
Collaborate with councils, charities, businesses, and training providers to enhance community partnerships and provide more meaningful volunteer experiences.
Conclusion
Volunteers’ Week 2025 is more than a calendar event, a national call to recognise, value, and uplift the incredible individuals who give so much, often behind the scenes. As we reflect on their contributions, let us also consider how we can support and grow a thriving culture of volunteering in our communities.
Now, more than ever, the UK needs compassion, unity, and active citizenship. By saying thank you, sharing stories, and getting involved, we can all help to amplify the voice of volunteers and inspire the next generation of changemakers.
