TQUK Level 2 Award in Emergency First at Work (QCF) is regulated by Ofqual. It is supported by Skills for Health.

Entry Requirements:

There are no specific entry requirements however; learners should have a minimum of Level 1 in literacy or numeracy, or equivalent. Learners must be at least 16 years of age at certification.

Minimum Guided Learning Hours (Recommended Duration):

The recommended guided learning hours for this qualification are a minimum of 8.

Who is this course for?

Learners wishing to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to enable them to provide appropriate care and manage life threatening conditions, minor illness and injuries. This qualification is particularly suitable for learners in full time employment, or those looking to gain vocational skills.

Why do you need this course?

Learners need this course so that they have the knowledge and understanding to enable them to provide appropriate care and manage life threatening conditions, minor illness and injuries. Learners will have the knowledge and skills required to provide Emergency First Aid in an occupational setting in a prompt, safe and effective manner to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) First Aid Regulations. The objectives of the qualification include supporting a role in the workplace and giving learners personal growth and engagement in learning. The qualification is usually delivered as a one-day programme of training and assessment for learners in work or preparing to work to allow them be first aiders in the workplace (low risk environments). This qualification lasts for a period of 3 years, after which learners will need to repeat the qualification, however it is recommended that learners refresh their knowledge annually.

Course Aims & Learning Outcomes;

At the end of this course you will:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Be able to assess an incident
  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally
  • Be able to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking.
  • Be able to manage a casualty with external bleeding
  • Be able to manage a casualty who is in shock
  • Be able to manage a casualty with a minor injury

After completing this course the learner can:

  • Identify the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Describe how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
  • Identify the need for establishing consent to provide first aid
  • Complete an accident report form
  • Identify the first aid equipment that should be available in a workplace
  • Describe the safe use of first aid equipment.
  • Conduct a scene survey
  • Conduct a primary survey of a casualty
  • Give examples of when to call for help.
  • Assess a casualty’s level of consciousness
  • Open a casualty’s airway and check breathing
  • Explain why it is important to place an unconscious casualty into the recovery position
  • Place an unresponsive casualty in the recovery position
  • Manage a casualty who is in seizure.
  • Recognise the need to commence Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Demonstrate Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation using a manikin.
  • Describe how to identify a casualty with a
  • Partially blocked airway
  • Completely blocked airway
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking.
  • Identify the types of external bleeding
  • Control external bleeding
  • Recognise shock
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is in shock.
  • Administer first aid to a casualty with small cuts, grazes and bruises
  • Administer first aid to a casualty with minor burns and scalds
  • Administer first aid to a casualty with small splinters.

How am I Assessed for this Qualification:

This qualification is assessed through activities, which are developed by the centre, internally marked and sampled as part of quality assurance/ internal verification procedures. Assessment must meet the requirements of the Assessment Principles for First Aid Qualifications. The recommended assessment methods for this qualification are:

  • Practical demonstration The practical assessment of learners for the qualification is completed throughout the course delivery. This ongoing assessment will involve learners demonstrating practical first aid skills across a number of areas.
  • Oral/written questions Learners will be required to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding by answering a range of questions relating to the assessment criteria. A learner may be assessed in British Sign Language or Irish Sign language where it is permitted for the purpose of Reasonable Adjustment.

All learning outcomes must be met to achieve a Pass - there is no grading.

Future Progression:

Successful learners can progress to other qualifications such as:

  • TQUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF)
  • TQUK Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid (QCF)
  • TQUK Level 2 Award in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillation (QCF)
