      What does mandatory training mean?

In health & social care sectors, mandatory training is an organisational requirement that helps to limit risk and maintain safe working practice.

      What does statutory training mean?

Statutory training is the training required to ensure that NHS Trusts and other healthcare providers meet their legislative duties. In most cases, statutory and mandatory training is delivered as follows:

      • All health and social care professionals must attend induction training in their first month of starting work with a new employer.
      • During their first year, all health and social care professionals must also complete the statutory and mandatory training sessions that were not covered in their induction.
      • Each year thereafter they should also complete the mandatory training sessions again (unless otherwise specified) to ensure and record that they are up to date.
Who is responsible for providing statutory and mandatory training?

Employers such as NHS Trusts and other healthcare providers have a responsibility to provide the appropriate statutory and mandatory training courses for their staff. They also have to ensure that all their staff attend the relevant statutory/mandatory training courses.
