What are the objectives of mandatory training?
Mandatory training helps medical, nursing and other health care staff to understand their responsibilities and meet the regulatory requirements. The public and regulatory authorities expect the NHS and other healthcare providers to deliver safe and effective care for all patients in line with their needs.
These training modules enable care staff, AHPs, doctors and nursing staff to meet their mandatory training requirements. Mandatory training modules can be delivered as part of staff induction, or as annual updates and mandatory refresher courses.
Which courses are mandatory for health and social care staff?
The Mandatory Training Group's training courses were developed for NHS Trusts and private health and social care providers including NHS framework agencies. All training modules are mapped to the Skills for Health's Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) in order to meet the UK national statutory and mandatory training requirements.

Who should complete mandatory training?
All allied health professionals (AHPs), doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants (HCAs) and other healthcare staff should complete mandatory and statutory training whether they work part time or full time. All locum and agency workers (including medical locums, AHPs and agency nurses) are also required to complete mandatory and statutory training.
Why do doctors, nurses and other healthcare staff need mandatory training?
Mandatory training is a compulsory requirement based upon the responsibility for medical, nursing, health and care staff to work in a safe manner. Can mandatory training certificates be used for NMC revalidation?
We receive many enquiries relating to revalidation for nurses and whether our mandatory training certificates can be used as CPD evidence for revalidation. Since April 2016, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) introduced a system called revalidation. This requires all nurses and midwives to provide evidence that they completed 40 hours of continuous professional development (CPD) every three years when they renew their registration.
The Mandatory Training Group's mandatory training courses (both the generic mandatory training and the Skills for Health aligned mandatory training courses) can be used by nurses and midwives as evidence of CPD hours attained when they complete revalidation. Nurses and midwives can also use our online statutory and mandatory training, as well as specialist health and social care courses for their continuing professional development.

Why do health and social care organisations need mandatory training?
All health and social care professionals are required to attend mandatory training. This includes hospital doctors, general practitioners (GPs), GP practice staff, allied health professionals (including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers among others) and health and social care support workers. Even 'bank' staff and temporary staff, locum doctors, locum AHPs, agency workers and agency nurses.
Healthcare professionals such as registered nurses, doctors and allied health professionals are required to undertake continuing professional development following qualification. For medical and nursing staff, CPD is required as part of their renewal on the General Medical Council (GMC) and Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration.
Attending mandatory training is part of post registration requirements for all healthcare staff. As part of their code of conduct, health and social care support workers (including clinical and non-clinical support workers, healthcare assistants and other care staff) are also required to complete statutory and mandatory training as part of their induction and undertake refresher training as required.
Mandatory training guidelines (such as the Skills for Health Core Skills Training Framework) specify clear learning outcomes and the level of knowledge required for the different bands of healthcare workers. This helps organisations to tailor training courses in line with the services they provide, rather than generic training across the board. As such, each organisation has to carry out a training needs assessment and decide which training courses are required for their staff to meet regulatory requirements.
In general, all staff should complete statutory training such as health and safety (in line with the Health and Safety at Work Act etc. 1974) and fire safety awareness. In addition, most staff should complete the core mandatory training modules, including manual handling and moving and handling (for people handlers), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (some staff may need to complete first aid training, basic life support, immediate life support or advanced life support). Other essential mandatory training modules include safeguarding adults and children; equality, diversity and human rights; infection prevention and control; information governance (including Caldicott principles, confidentiality and data protection) and conflict management among others.
The core statutory and mandatory training modules help to improve staff confidence as well as compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements. In addition, the government and taxpayers can also have confidence in healthcare providers, knowing that staff are aware of their responsibilities and provide safe and effective services. A review of CQC inspection reports show that some health and social care organisations fail to adequately safeguard vulnerable people in their care. Also, there are many avoidable injuries relating to poor moving and handling techniques. Adequate mandatory training helps organisations to minimise the risk of injuries and losses related to lack of awareness and poor techniques.
Keeping up to date with regulatory requirements
Regulatory organisations such as the CQC focus on organisational compliance with key standards. Induction training and mandatory training updates help medical, nursing and other healthcare workers to stay up to date with latest guidance and best practice.
The healthcare environment is constantly changing The Mandatory Training Group are involved in various research projects, evaluations and national audits. Our experienced trainers will discuss relevant updates and latest techniques during classroom training sessions.
We fully understand that there are a lot of pressures on organisations from different angles, including lack of funding and increasing budgetary pressures. Sometimes health and social care workers cannot find time to attend mandatory training updates. However, failure to complete mandatory training refresher courses comes with substantial risks to patients, health and social care professionals and service providers.
The Mandatory Training Group has developed high impact mandatory training courses that cover the essential elements of each training modules. Together with our FREE blended learning environment (BLE), training delegates can use a combination of highly interactive e-learning courses together with classroom learning and support from their line managers. This makes our training services highly accessible and affordable for healthcare and social care providers regardless of how big or small they are.
