Why is mandatory training required for health and social care staff?
Mandatory training is a compulsory requirement for all health and care staff. Nurses, doctors and allied health professionals (AHPs) are required to complete mandatory training as part of their post registration compliance. Mandatory training requirements and guidelines are different for each clinical area. The training should be tailored for each group of healthcare professionals.
Core mandatory training modules
Each employer should develop mandatory training that is relevant and adequate for their patient groups to ensure that all nurses, doctors and healthcare support workers deliver safe and effective care at all times. However, the core mandatory training subjects include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), health and safety at work, fire safety awareness, people moving and handling among others. These mandatory training courses highlight the key safety issues that medical, nursing and care staff should be aware of to ensure that they deliver high quality and safe care at all times.
Regulatory & professional requirements for mandatory training
Many regulatory and professional organisations, such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the General Medical Council (GMC), the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) have often highlighted the importance of mandatory training for nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals to meet legislative compliance, improve staff confidence and competences. This also supports the view that public services such as the National Health Service (NHS) should inspire public confidence, rather than just delivering mandatory training to tick compliance boxes.
Keeping up to date with research & technological advancements
Healthcare services are often being transformed by new technologies and innovative treatments. Mandatory training should equally be innovative to ensure that doctors' nurses' and care staff's mandatory training courses are relevant and up to date. This includes latest technologies such as clinical decision support systems (CDSSs), patient monitoring systems, automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and other clinical equipment. Failure to include these electronic systems in mandatory training modules results in poorly trained medical, nursing and care staff who may not be able to deliver optimum care for patients. This poor mandatory training results in unnecessary pain and suffering for patients and their loved ones, poor standards of care for NHS hospitals, higher healthcare costs and at times avoidable loss of life.
All partners in the health and social care sectors should work together to ensure that mandatory training for medical, nursing and care staff is fit for purpose. Health and social care employers and employees alike should ensure that adequate time and resources are ring-fenced so that doctors, nurses and care staff are able to commit and attend mandatory training that is relevant and adequate for their job roles.
