What is a sensory impairment?

"Sensory impairment is when any one of a person's senses becomes abnormal; for example sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste and spatial awareness"

Examples of sensory impairment - a person wears glasses, they have a sight impairment. Likewise, if a person finds it hard to hear or have a hearing aid, then they have a hearing impairment. Unlike common misconceptions, a person does not have to have full loss of a sense to be sensory impaired.

What is dual sensory impairment?

"Dual sensory impairment is the combination of both hearing and sight impairment. Dual sesnory impairment does not necessarily mean a  total loss of both senses. In fact, the majority of dual sensory impaired people do have some degree of sight and/or hearing"

However, those with a less severe degree of both sight and hearing impairment may also be referred to as having a dual sensory impairment or loss. The words dual sensory impaired and deafblind are generally accepted as inter-changeable words.

Why is sensory impairment awareness training important?

Basic sensory impairment awareness training is essential for all health care and social care support workers. It is quite likely that medical, nursing and other health care and care staff will support or provide care for people who may have sensory impairments.
