The TQUK Level 3 Award for Manual Handling Trainers (QCF) is regulated by Ofqual. It is supported by Proskills.

Entry Requirements:

There are no specific entry requirements however learners should have a minimum of level two in literacy and numeracy or equivalent. The qualification is suitable for learners of 18 years of age and above.

Minimum Guided Learning Hours (Recommended Duration):

The recommended guided learning hours for this qualification are a minimum of 18.

Who is this course for?

This Level 3 Award for Manual Handling Trainers course should be completed by learners aiming to develop skills in delivering training sessions in a manual handling context. Consisting of two mandatory units, the first unit develops learners' knowledge and understanding of the principles and process of safe manual handling and risk assessment. Whereas, the second unit develops learners' knowledge and skills so that they can prepare, deliver and evaluate a training session. The qualification aims to develop skills in delivering training sessions in a manual handling context.

Why do you need this course?

Learners need this course so that they are able to successfully provide training to other members of staff on the right way to conduct manual handling. The qualification consists of two mandatory units. The first unit develops learners’ knowledge and understanding of the principles and process of safe manual handling and risk assessment. The second unit develops learners’ knowledge and skills so that they can prepare, deliver and evaluate training.

At the end of this course you will:

  • Understand the reasons for safe manual handling
  • Understand how manual handling risk assessments contribute to improving health and safety
  • Understand the principles, types of equipment and testing requirements associated with manual handling safety
  • Be able to produce a plan for a training session.
  • Be able to deliver a training session.
  • Be able to evaluate training sessions

After completing this course the learner can:

  • Outline the potential injuries and ill health associated with incorrect manual handing
  • Outline employers’ and employees’ duties relating to manual handling at work
  • Outline the consequences for non- compliance with health and safety requirements at work
  • Explain the terms ‘hazard’ and ‘risk’ in the context of manual handling work
  • Outline the process for carrying out a manual handling risk assessment
  • Describe the principle of the risk control hierarchy when applied to manual handling
  • Describe safe movement principles associated with manual handling
  • Outline the types of equipment designed to be used for manual handling tasks
  • Outline the requirements for the testing, servicing and examination of manual handling and lifting equipment
  • Create a plan for a training session which includes
  • a) Intended learners
  • b) Intended learning outcomes
  • c) Resources required
  • d) Timing
  • e) Delivery methods
  • f) How the learning will be assessed.
  • Create a physical and emotional environment conducive to learning.

  • Use appropriate techniques to check learning has taken place.
  • Collect feedback on the training session.
  • Review the session based on feedback.
  • Create an action plan for future sessions.
  • Give constructive feedback to others.

How am I Assessed for this Qualification:

This qualification is assessed through activities, which are developed by the centre, internally marked and sampled as part of quality assurance/ internal verification procedures. Assessment must include a minimum of 15 minute microteach within a training session. These include templates for a lesson plan, observation and evaluation The assessment and quality assurance process will be subject to external quality assurance/verification by TQUK. The recommended assessment methods for this qualification are:

  • Written assignment
  • Observation of learner’s skills
  • Question and answer sessions

All learning outcomes must be met to achieve a Pass - there is no grading.
