What are basic patient observations?
Basic patient observations are regular measurements and documentation of physiological observations (also known as clinical observations; patient observations, vital signs or simply "obs"). The basic observations are essential requirements for patient assessment and the recognition of clinical deterioration.
The core basic patient observations are:
- Temperature
- Pulse/heart rate
- Respirations
- Blood pressure
- Oxygen saturations
Why is clinical observations training important?
Nurses and healthcare assistants (HCAs) spend a lot of time with patients/clients in their roles as part of the wider health/clinical care team. This means that they have a lot of opportunities to observe patients/clients, to monitor how they are progressing and to spot any problems early. These can then be escalated to senior or more experienced staff so that the appropriate interventions can be commenced to stop the patient deteriorating further.
This basic observation training course has been designed for healthcare assistants and other clinical staff who are looking to improve their medical skills and knowledge and will enable them to be employed within hospital environments.
