Who is the course for?

This online Adult Basic Life Support - Train the Trainer + Trainer Pack was developed for health and social care staff who are responsible for workplace induction and onboarding training in the following roles:

Adult social care workers

This is also suitable for trainers who train staff in community care settings, including home care workers and domiciliary care staff.

Non-clinical roles

This is also suitable for trainers who train staff in non-clinical roles including, caring volunteers, porters, cooks and drivers with direct contact with patient/service users.

Course aims

Our train the trainer courses provide the learner (the trainer) with the necessary subject knowledge to train new health and social care workers and those who do not hold formal qualifications.
As a trainer, you may have to adapt the aims to meet your service requirements.

Provide sufficient knowledge and skills to be able to recognise and respond to signs of clinical deterioration.
Promote awareness and understanding in the needs and care of the deteriorating patient.
Provide a clear understanding of the legislation and the current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidance regarding basic life support.

Learning objectives

Explain the national guidelines and local resuscitation policies and procedures.
Establish the signs of clinical deterioration in adults.
Discuss how to respond when cardiac arrest is suspected.
Establish how to open the airway of a collapsed adult.
Explore how to initiate and maintain effective chest compressions and rescue breaths.
Explain how an automated external defibrillator (AED) can be operated safely and appropriately.
Establish the appropriate emergency response for choking.
Review the principles of DNACPR.
Establish their individual role and responsibilities in emergency situations.
Present how to report and record details of an emergency event accurately.

Learning outcomes

As a trainer, you have to ensure that the learning outcomes align with the needs of your organisational policies and procedures.

In general, on completion of this online Adult Basic Life Support - Train the Trainer course, the learner will be able to:

Identify national guidelines and local resuscitation policies and procedures
Recognise and respond to patients with clinical deterioration or cardiorespiratory arrest, escalating care in accordance with local policy.
Initiate an appropriate emergency response, which may include management of choking, and the use of the recovery position, all in accordance with current Resuscitation Council UK guidelines.
Demonstrate effective chest compressions in accordance with current Resuscitation Council UK guidelines.
Justify basic airway management to ensure an open airway.
Initiate and maintain effective lung ventilation in accordance with current Resuscitation Council UK guidelines.
Demonstrate how an automated external defibrillator (AED) can be operated safely and appropriately.
State thier role and responsibilities in responding to persons in emergency situations.
Explain thier responsibilities in reporting and recording details of an emergency event accurately.
Explain the importance of undertaking any resuscitation interventions within the limits of your personal capabilities and context of any previous training received.
Describe how to apply the local Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Policy or anticipatory care decision within a clinical context.
