    Personality disorders are among the most challenging forms of mental illness to treat. Often, people with these disorders do not seek help because they can function in their day-to-day lives.

    Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a condition characterised by difficulties regulating emotion. People with BPD feel emotions intensely and for extended periods. They find it hard to return to a stable baseline after an emotionally triggering event.

    The five warning signs of mental illness include:

  • Long-lasting sadness or irritability
  • Extremely high and low moods
  • Excessive fear, worry, or anxiety
  • Social withdrawal
  • Dramatic changes in eating or sleeping habits.

  • Anorexia is the most lethal psychiatric disorder, carrying a sixfold increased risk of death. It is four times the death risk from major depression. The odds are even worse for people first diagnosed with anorexia in their 20s.

    Mental illnesses, in general, are thought to be caused by a variety of genetic and environmental factors:
