Gaseous anaesthetics are a single gas nitrous oxide and volatile fluorinated liquids (isoflurane, desflurane, sevoflurane) that are administered via specific vaporisers. It transforms the liquids into gases that diminish and, at higher doses, eradicate patient awareness.

Inhaled anaesthetics (gases or liquids that change readily into gases) are also used to bring about and maintain unconsciousness. These include nitrous oxide, halothane, enflurane, and isoflurane.

Currently, carbon dioxide is the most frequently used gas for insufflation of the abdominal cavity (pneumoperitoneum).
