    Healthy housing is a shelter that supports a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing. Healthy housing provides a feeling of home, including a sense of belonging, security and privacy.

    The housing health and safety rating system (HHSRS) is a risk-based evaluation tool to help local authorities identify and protect against potential risks and hazards to health and safety from any deficiencies identified in dwellings. It was introduced under the Housing Act 2004 and applied to residential properties in England and Wales.

    This assessment method focuses on the hazards that are present in housing. Tackling these hazards will make the house healthier and safer to live.

    The aim of this guide is for non-specialists, in particular, private landlords to help them understand the requirements under the Housing Act 2004 concerning the HHSRS. It helps them identify the type of work that is needed on their properties to conform with the HHSRS.

    The Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) assesses 29 housing hazards and the effect that each may have on the health and safety of current or future occupants of the property. If danger is a serious and immediate risk to a person's health and safety, this is known as a category one hazard.

    Most jurisdictions allow tenants to withhold rent if a landlord fails to maintain a rented living space, rendering it unlivable. Examples may include significant water leaks and flooding, missing walls or roof that exposes the living area to the elements, fire hazards, toxic mould, and several other conditions.

    The lack of stable, affordable housing is the foundation of many social problems, including poverty, homelessness, educational disparities, and health care. Most poor renting families spend at least half of their income on housing costs.

    Children who have lived in temporary accommodation for over a year are three times as likely to have mental health problems, including depression and anxiety, compared to their peers. Living in poor housing affects women more than men.

Smoking, alcohol, and drugs are some of the key physical health factors that can promote mental wellbeing. Some of the things that can affect mental wellbeing are stress, working too much, and being too inactive.

    Housing is a public health issue. Experts agree that affordable, sanitary housing is essential for good health — and healthy communities.

    The manifestation of housing problems and the housing needs are overcrowding, poor and inadequate social amenities, disturbing, harmful environmental conditions and urban poverty. The absence of open space, the development of land area leading to overcrowding of buildings, inaccessibility within residential are also a manifestation of housing problems.

    City living can also chip away at your psychological immune system, which can be precarious for those with a family history of mental illness.
