However, some decision makers are not sure which training they require, which may result in inappropriate training courses being delivered and unnecessary duplication.
Statutory and mandatory training is essential for any Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulated care environment and should be an integral part of any care home or similar environment. We help many care organisations to meet their mandatory and statutory training requirements across all UK regions. What is mandatory training for care home staff?
"Mandatory training is a compulsory requirement for all health and social care staff, including nurses, managers, support workers and carers. Mandatory training courses for care homes are designed to help care home owners and their staff to safely deliver care to their residents and meet the regulatory requirements set out by the Care Quality Commission, Skills for Care and expectations of the commissioners"
Why do health and social care workers need mandatory training?
✔ Skills for Care, Health Education England and CQC have continually highlighted the importance of training and education for nurses and health & social care support workers working in social care settings such as nursing homes, residential homes and domiciliary care environments.
✔ Essentially, mandatory care training enables the delivery of high quality care, maintenance of mandatory care standards, ensure that safety of care workers, and overall business performance.
✔ The Mandatory Training Group provide mandatory training for these social care settings across all UK regions. We take our time to work with organisations and tailor training to their needs, while meeting regulatory requirements at the appropriate level of skills and understanding for each group of health and social care workers.
What are the Care Quality Commission's training requirements for care homes?
To meet the CQC Regulation 18, regulated health and social care providers are required to meet the following:
The Mandatory Training Group provide CQC and Skills for
Care aligned statutory and mandatory training. CQC's Regulation 18 requires health and social care providers to have enough workers who are suitably qualified, competent and experienced as stated in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulation 2014. Health and social care providers are required to:
- have sufficient numbers of workers who are suitably qualified and competent, with the necessary skills and experience to meet the needs of their service users.
- meet an additional requirements from other regulatory requirements as part of Regulation 18
- provide care staff with support, training, professional development, supervision and appraisals that are necessary for them to carry out their role and responsibilities
- support care staff to obtain further qualifications and provide evidence, where required, to the appropriate regulator to show that they meet the professional standards needed to continue to practice
Although CQC cannot prosecute for a breach of Regulation 18 or any of its parts, they have the powers to take regulatory action. CQC may also refuse registration if social care providers fail to provide satisfactory evidence that they will continue to comply with this regulation.
Which training courses are mandatory for care home staff?
Nursing and residential homes provide support and care for vulnerable individuals who may not always be able to make independent decisions. The quality of care delivered to care home residents mostly relies on care staff, most of whom are support workers and carers. Health and social care support workers require adequate induction training and annual refresher training to ensure that they remain up to date with recommended practice and regulatory requirements.
The most common mandatory training subjects for care homes include the following:
- Health and Safety awareness training
- Emergency First Aid at Work/Resuscitation
- Manual Handling/Moving and Handling of People
- Infection Prevention and Control
- Food Hygiene/Food Safety Awareness
- Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults (or Children depending on service)
- Equality, Diversity and Human Rights
The specific mandatory training requirements depend on each organisation (e.g., size of care home, the services that it delivers and the prior risk assessments that have been undertaken), with some requiring additional modules such as Managing Challenging Behavior/Conflict Management; Complaints Handling; Mental Capacity; Deprivation of Liberties Safeguards; Data Protection/Information Governance; Care Planning and Record Keeping, among many others.
Fire Safety is not included in this list because most social care organisations cover it as part of the statutory annual fire risk assessment. Senior Carers and qualified nurses require additional training such as Safe Handling of Medicines; Advanced Care Planning, Report Writing and Record Keeping; Supervision and Leadership.
Care organisations should provide training that is relevant and appropriate for their employees to competently carry out their roles. However, it is essential that each shift is adequately covered and that there is the necessary skills mix to ensure adequate supervision and support for less experienced care workers.
What are the responsibilities of care home mangers and responsible people?
The Health and Social Care Act (2008) Regulation 23 requires registered person of each care home to ensure that they have the necessary arrangements to ensure that all their employees receive appropriate support to safely and competently do their work (the regulated activities) and deliver high quality care and treatment by:
- completing appropriate training, continuing professional development (CPD), adequate supervision and appraisal
- supporting their employees to obtain further training and qualifications that is relevant and appropriate for their duties
