In healthcare, the full certificate is an expectation for staff starting work as healthcare assistants, assistant practitioners and in clinical support roles where there is direct patient contact such as maternity support workers, OT assistants, and physiotherapy assistants.

There are lots of entry-level care roles you could do, such as a care worker or personal assistant. There are also support tasks such as office and administration, cook or kitchen assistant, driver or transport manager or housekeeping.

The diplomas are the core qualifications for social care. It is recommended that all care staff have at least a level 2 or 3 diploma in health and social care (or the equivalent NVQ if studied before 2010).

The care certificate gives everyone the confidence that workers have the same introductory skills, knowledge and behaviours to provide compassionate, safe and high-quality care and support.

There are no set entry requirements to become a healthcare assistant. Employers expect functional literacy and numeracy and may ask for GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and maths. They may ask for a healthcare qualification, such as BTEC or NVQ. Employers expect you to have some experience in healthcare or care work.

The code of conduct describes how a support worker should behave, and the care certificate describes the minimum things they must know and be able to do.

A duty of care is a legal obligation imposed on an individual requiring adherence to a standard of reasonable care while performing any acts that could foreseeably harm others. It is the first element that is established to proceed with an action in negligence.

The care certificate became mandatory in April 2015. It is expected that all those working as healthcare assistants and adult social care workers undertake this learning as part of their induction programme.

  • More specifically, they should have:

  • The ability to be aware and sensitive at all times

  • A high level of patience as shifts can be long and often stressful.
  • The five principles are:

  • Safety
  • Dignity

  • Privacy
  • Communication
  • Nurse assistants keep these five principles in mind as they perform all of their duties and actions for the patients in their care. The first principle is safety.

    The experience of the pilot sites has shown that for full-time staff the average amount of time taken for a new employee to demonstrate the expected competencies and knowledge is 12 weeks.

    Staff have to be assessed against all the standards before they can be awarded the care certificate. Evidence of prior learning cannot be accepted instead of an assessment, except for the standard on basic life support.

    It sets out minimum standards that should be covered in induction training before members of the healthcare support and social care workforce are allowed to work without direct supervision. The certificate was developed by a partnership of Health Education England, Skills for Health and Skills for Care.

    There is no statutory requirement for providers to implement the care certificate so the Care Quality Commission (CQC) cannot enforce it. CQC inspectors do however have powers to enforce regulations covering staff training.

    This care certificate e-learning package was developed to meet the required Skills for Care learning outcomes, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and recommendations for health and social care providers.

    The care certificate consists of 15 standards that health and social care workers across the country must adhere to throughout every step of their working life.
