What is cardiopulmonary resuscitation?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions, usually with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest. CPR is recommended in those who are unresponsive with no breathing or abnormal breathing, for example, agonal respirations.

What is basic life support?

Basic life support (BLS) is a level of medical care which is used for victims of life-threatening illnesses or injuries until they can be given full medical care at a hospital. It can be provided by trained medical personnel, including emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and by qualified bystanders.

Why is basic life support training important?

It is important to understand that the objective of providing basic life support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation is not to 'treat' the person but to buy some valuable time until the emergency medical aid arrives. Basic life support procedures are mainly used on people experiencing cardiac arrest or respiratory failure. It is essential for those working in healthcare and social care environments to complete appropriate cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic life support training in line with their roles.

The Mandatory Training Group provides classroom and online resuscitation and basic life support training courses that meet the required learning outcomes in the Skills for Health’s UK Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) and Care Quality Commission (CQC) recommendations for health and social care providers.

Is basic life support the same as cardiopulmonary resuscitation?

Basic Life Support describes a set of basic life saving first aid techniques. The Resuscitation Council (UK) produces a set of cardiopulmonary resuscitation guidelines for first aiders to administer basic life support that cover:

  • Safe management of an incident
  • Dealing with an unresponsive breathing casualty (recovery position)
  • Dealing with an unresponsive non-breathing casualty (cardiopulmonary resuscitation & chain of survival)
  • Dealing with a choking casualty both mild and severe  (back slaps & abdominal thrusts)

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation involves chest compressions for adults between 5 cm (2.0 in) and 6 cm (2.4 in) deep and at a rate of at least 100 to 120 per minute. The rescuer (person doing the resuscitation) may also provide artificial ventilation by either exhaling air into the subject's mouth or nose (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) or using a device that pushes air into the subject's lungs (mechanical ventilation). Current recommendations from the Resuscitation Council (UK) place emphasis on early and high-quality chest compressions over artificial ventilation; a simplified CPR method involving chest compressions only is recommended for untrained rescuers. In children, however, only doing compressions may result in worse outcomes. Chest compression to breathing ratios is set at 30 to 2 in adults.

                                What’s included in the resuscitation and basic life support courses?

                                The online CPR and basic life support training courses cover comprehensive details of various scenarios in line with the Resuscitation Council UK cardiopulmonary resuscitation guidelines. The basic life support e-learning course covers 13 modules, including:

                                1. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) – Learn how to safely and efficiently perform CPR on infants, children, and adults. Determine the best course of action to take based on underlying circumstances and if and when CPR should be ceased at any given time. The sic life support course highlights the benefits of combining CPR with automated external defibrillation (AED) and how it improves outcomes.
                                2. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation modules – uses various scenarios including CPR by a single rescuer and other case studies where there are more than one rescuer.  CPR covers chest compressions on different demographics, including obese patients and pregnant women. CPR also includes clearing the airway, improving circulation and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (rescue breathing if required).
                                3. AED – Next up on the list of BLS training materials is how and when to use an Automated External Defibrillator or AED. In most cases, this is used after CPR is completed. Students also get a chance to study specific conditions that respond more favourably to AED use, including Ventricular Tachycardia, where a rapid heartbeat is observed. Ventricular Fibrillation is another condition that health care students will learn about during the standard BLS course and training. The AED module furthermore covers additional steps to take for using an automated external defibrillator in special circumstances, such as in cases of trauma, drowning, or electrocution. In cases of Ventricular Fibrillation, it’s essential to get medical intervention as no treatment will result in the loss of blood circulation, and ultimately, the loss of oxygen.
                                4. First Aid Training – It is human nature to make mistakes. When injuries happen as a result of human error or other extenuating circumstances, like a car crash or natural disaster, the BLS course teaches rescuers how to be prepared to help injured parties. The first aid module outlines the best way to stock first aid kits and how to treat common injuries, including nosebleeds, cuts, burns, and fractures, for example.
                                5. Wound Care – Learn how to make a wound diagnosis on-the-spot and the best practices for dressing different wound types. This module covers basic care treatments for open chest wounds, punctured wounds, amputations, and cuts and scrapes. The wound care unit also emphasizes the importance of keeping wounds clean to reduce the risk of infection.
                                6. The Heart – To better understand the value of basic life support, one has to study how the human heart works. The National CPR Foundation’s well-rounded BLS course and training that teaches students the basic structure of the heart and treatments for specific conditions like a cardiac arrest, heart attack, chest pain, or respiratory arrest.
                                7. Fractures – Fractures can range in severity and proper measures should be taken to improve the patient’s chances of recovery and survival. As a health care worker, you will get to read about indicated protocols for fractures, sprains and strains, bruises, and even dental avulsions.
                                8. Burns – Recognize the main classifications of burn injuries (i.e. first, second, and third-degree burns). Then, study how to best treat each type of burn in the interim of rushing patients to the hospital.
                                9. Poisoning – Get familiar with what to do in the event someone overdoses on drugs or ingests toxic chemicals. This unit addresses how to identify poisoning caused by bites and stings and what to do if a patient goes into anaphylaxis shock.
                                10. Hemorrhages and Hypoglycemia – Read all about the four classes of hemorrhaging (loss of blood) and what to do in this event. This model also overviews hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and what to use on hand for restoring a sense of calm and well-being in patients.
                                11. Choking – Learn the best techniques for dislodging objects in the windpipe of infants, children, and adults. The Heimlich maneuver is usually used for older children and adults and video demos of this technique are available in the curriculum. BLS trainees, in addition, learn what to do if patients are unconscious. This module also provides a crash course on the basic treatments for hypothermia and external dehydration.
                                12. Injuries – Find the best ways to treat eye injuries, including black eye or an eye that has been injured by a chemical solution or foreign object. Also, review the best guidelines for handling concussions, head injuries, or spinal injuries.
                                13. Shocks, Seizures, and Strokes – Recognize the signs of all three conditions and how to respond, medically speaking, in the best way possible.
                                14. Pathogens – The final module in the BLS course and training overviews how to prevent the transmission of blood-borne pathogens in medical environments, including HIV, Hepatitis, and other diseases. Learn how each is transmitted and universal precautions to exercise in the workplace.
                                15. BLS Test - Finally you'll be able to test your knowledge of our BLS certification course. After you'll be prompted for purchase.

                                Our BLS certification training is a wide-ranging lesson plan that helps rescuers become better prepared for the job at hand. At any given time, participants can skip modules or reread the coursework as-needed.

                                When studying basic life support, however, health care workers quickly realize that every lesson is interconnected. As a result, The National CPR Foundation recommends studying all modules, as this knowledge can prove invaluable in scenarios where multiple injuries are sustained.

                                The National CPR Foundation reminds trainees that should medical emergencies unfold in real life, the first course of action is to use basic care techniques, such as applying pressure to severe bleeds and clearing the airway. The next critical step is for rescuers to call 911 and perform CPR until help arrives.

                                BLS certification test

                                  The BLS test features 10 questions that hold a 10-point value each. Created in multiple-choice or true or false variations, you need at least 70 points in order to pass or 7/10 correct answers.

                                  If at first you don’t succeed, students have an opportunity to try as many times as necessary. There is no cap on the number of times to take the test. There are additionally no payment pop-ups for retesting. The National CPR Foundation only prompts students to pay once the exam is passed, and this too is elective.

                                  BLS recertification

                                    For healthcare professionals who have already participated in basic life support certification training and have previously passed the test, one alternative to sacrificing valuable time is to skip directly to the exam portion of the Basic Life Support BLS Certification Course. This option can be found under the “Begin the Course” button at the end of the page.

                                    Click on “Skip to BLS Test” and you’ll be well on your way to getting recertified in minutes. If you do need a refresher course on BLS, this is certainly an option, too.

                                    BLS certification validity

                                      The course ends upon successful completion of the examination. With a passing grade, graduates receive a BLS certificate and a temporary wallet card that can be either be printed on-the-spot or saved via email. The permanent wallet card made of durable vinyl is mailed to the listed address at checkout and should be expected within two to five business days.

                                      Once you pass the BLS exam, the certification is valid for two years. To help employers check for the BLS validity, direct them to the main website, where an e-Verify tool is available to check the status of the certification.

                                      Next steps

                                        Now that it’s clear what the BLS class entails, take a look around and decide if it’s right for you. Remember, there are no obligations whatsoever and no upfront payments due. The course can be completed in hours or less, and an immediate proof of accreditation is available after the test.

                                        Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation

                                        The guidelines contain detailed information about basic and advanced life support for adults, paediatrics and the newborn. Also included are guidelines for the use of Automated External Defibrillators and other related topics.

                                        The Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines have been adapted from the 2015 ERC Guidelines and are tailored specifically to clinical practice in the UK.

                                          The Resuscitation Council (UK) Immediate Life Support (ILS) course was launched in 2002. It was developed in response to a demand from healthcare professionals who may have to act as first responders and treat patients in cardiac arrest until the arrival of a cardiac arrest team.

                                          Each year, on average, 11,000 courses are held and 92,000 healthcare professionals are trained.

                                          Who is this course suitable for?

                                          The ILS course is suitable for doctors, medical students, nurses, nursing students, midwives, healthcare providers such as physiotherapists, dentist and ambulance technicians. It may also be suitable for fire service technicians, police personnel and prison officers.

                                          Learning outcomes

                                          The ILS course teaches the knowledge and skills to:

                                          • identify the causes and promote the prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest;
                                          • recognise and treat the deteriorating patient using the ABCDE approach;
                                          • undertake the skills of quality CPR and defibrillation (manual and /or AED) and simple airway manoeuvres;
                                          • utilise non-technical skills to facilitate initial leadership and effective team membership

                                          Course structure and programme

                                          ILS courses are held at centres throughout the UK and are approved and certified by the Resuscitation Council (UK). This ensures a uniformity of content and standard regardless of the centre.

                                          The ILS course is run over one day and the course programme consists of one lecture, skill stations and cardiac arrest simulations (i.e. CASTeach).

                                          The half-day recertification ILS course is only available to those within one year of the expiry of their Resuscitation Council (UK) ILS provider certificate. If more than a year has elapsed since the expiry of the ILS certificate the full ILS course must be attended.

                                          Assessment and Certification

                                          Assessment is continuous and is guided by the assessment forms provided for each core skill (e.g. initial resuscitation and assessment, and airway management). Copies of the assessment forms should be forwarded to the candidate with their manual.

                                          Successful candidates receive a Resuscitation Council (UK) ILS provider certificate, which is valid for one year. The ILS course is recognised for up to 5 continuing professional development (CPD) points.

                                          Pre-course preparation

                                          The manual is sent to candidates two weeks before the start of the course. Candidates are expected to have prepared for the course by reading the manual. Some centres may send candidates an MCQ paper which support candidate learning.

                                          Resuscitation Council (UK) Advanced Life Support (ALS)

                                          The Resuscitation Council (UK) Advanced Life Support (ALS) course was launched 1993. It is a standardised national course teaching evidence-based resuscitation guidelines and skills to healthcare professionals in the United Kingdom. The ALS course has also been adopted by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC).

                                          Each year, on average, 1,000 courses are held and 20,000 healthcare professionals are trained.

                                          Who is this course suitable for?

                                          The ALS provider course is designed for healthcare professionals who would be expected to apply the skills taught as part of their clinical duties, or to teach them on a regular basis. Appropriate participants include doctors, paramedics and nurses working in acute care areas (e.g. ED, CCU, ICU, HDU, operating theatres, acute medical admissions units) or on resuscitation /medical emergency/ICU outreach teams. All applicants must hold a professional healthcare qualification or be in training for a professional healthcare qualification. Medical students, nurses and other healthcare providers not covered in the groups above should be encouraged to complete the Immediate Life Support (ILS) course. Those with a particular interest in resuscitation should then consider attending an ALS provider course, where appropriate. Medical students in their final year of training can be accepted as candidates on an ALS course if this is an established local arrangement.

                                          Learning outcomes

                                          The ALS course teaches the knowledge and skills required to:

                                          • recognise and treat the deteriorating patient using a structured ABCDE approach;
                                          • deliver standardised CPR in adults;
                                          • manage a cardiac arrest by working with a multidisciplinary team in an emergency situation;
                                          • utilise non-technical skills to facilitate strong team leadership and effective team membership.

                                          Course structure and programme

                                          ALS courses are held at centres throughout the UK and are approved and certified by the Resuscitation Council (UK). This ensures uniformity of content and standard regardless of the centre.

                                          This is a 2-day face-to-face course.

                                          All candidates will be registered on the Learning Management System (LMS) regardless of their chosen course pathway to access course modules, pre-course multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ), course evaluation and post course certificates.

                                          The course programme consists of lectures, workshops, skill stations and cardiac arrest simulations (i.e. CASTeach).

                                          Assessment and Certification

                                          Continuous assessment occurs throughout the ALS course, which is based on clinical simulations that allow candidates to demonstrate the core competencies that have been taught on the course. These include airway management, high quality CPR and defibrillation and cardiac arrest management. A final assessment of candidates at the end of the course takes the form of management of a cardiac arrest simulation and a MCQ paper. Successful candidates receive a Resuscitation Council (UK) ALS provider certificate, which is valid for 4 years. The ALS course is recognised for up to 10 continuing professional development (CPD) points.

                                          Pre-course preparation

                                          The course manual is sent to candidates one month before the course. Candidates are expected to have prepared for the course by reading the manual and submitting their completed pre-course MCQ paper before attending the face-to-face course. Candidates are advised to complete the pre-course MCQ without reference to the manual. Candidates are also given access to e-learning materials on the LMS.  For those candidates attending the e-ALS course, the e-learning content replaces the first day of the 2-day course and they must access and undertake the e-learning component before attending the face-to-face element of the course. Prior competence in CPR is an essential prerequisite to attending the course.

                                          How to apply for this course

                                          ALS courses are held throughout the year at centres across the UK. To apply, candidates should search for a course below (alternatively ALS, e-ALS or recertification ALS) and contact individual course centres for application details. Course fees are decided locally by the course centre; the Resuscitation Council (UK) only charges the course centre £26 per candidate registration and £28 per ALS manual. Basic Life Support Training for healthcare and social care professionals (UK)

                                          Rapid response to emergency situations can save lives, making life support training critically important for healthcare staff. These resources can help train participants to provide basic life support to people of all ages, and can act as refresher material for those who have already completed similar training.

                                          Survival rates for an unconscious individual are increased by up to 60 percent through prompt resuscitation. With this in mind, life support training aims to increase learners’ confidence when responding to emergency situations. This enables them to act swiftly and effectively to give the affected individual the best chance of recovery.

                                          This training also outlines the different approaches when providing life support to adults, children, and infants, in order to minimise accidental harm being caused in the process of resuscitation. Furthermore, life support training explains how to recognise and respond to cardiopulmonary arrest, including safe usage of defibrillators.

                                          Our extensive list of resources include life support online training, and a variety of face-to-face training courses. Scroll down for all course options, or refine your search using the available filters.
