In this article, we’re going to take a look at how you can take an online first aid course, what this involves, and why you might pick one.

Why Choose an Online First Aid Course?
Businesses up and down the UK are increasingly taking advantage of the wealth of courses that are available online, and those that relate to first aid are amongst the most popular. There are many reasons for this. The first, of course, is that having members of staff trained in first aid is hugely useful - it means that the business is better prepared to deal with accidents, injuries and even some illnesses in the workplace. Accidents can happen in just about any place of work, which makes first aid a very valuable skill indeed. Having a proper response to accidents has a variety of benefits, ranging from giving employees a better standard of life at work, to reducing time off sick, to reducing the likelihood of legal challenges.

Online courses also offer some major benefits over physical training that are especially attractive to businesses, such as:

They can be lower cost than practical training
The time commitment is lower
Training can be undertaken at a time that is convenient
Courses can be put down and picked up again at any point
They are useful as a refresher and are not as challenging as official first aid qualifications

What Do Online Courses Cover?
Naturally, online courses are slightly limited in what they can cover when compared with physical training because there can be no practical application, and there are many different types of course out there. If you are looking for a course, either for yourself or your employees, then it is important that you research your options to find out exactly what each one offers. It is very important to note that online first aid courses do not make the learner a qualified first aider - there are strict legal requirements about what must be undertaken in order for this to happen, and more information around this can be found on the Government’s Health and Safety Executive website. However, all good online courses are put together by fully qualified individuals and organisations.

Typically, online first aid courses will explain all of the procedure and knowledge behind administering first aid. Much of this does not require practical application, as the information is around recognising symptoms and understanding what you can do until further, more technical medical help is given. Some of the things that are likely to be covered in an online first aid course include the following:

What to do if you’re the first person on the scene of an accident
How to decide if the situation is still hazardous
How to assess a casualty’s response, breathing and circulation
Recognising symptoms of certain conditions such as shock
How to place a person into the recovery position and why this should be done
When and how CPR should be applied to a casualty
Other specific treatments such as controlling bleeding or dressing wounds
How Does an Online First Aid Course Work?
Online courses are designed to be as straightforward as possible. Once you have chosen a provider and a particular course, you will be able to purchase it online. Depending on whether you have purchased it for yourself, or a number of employees, you will then need to enrol your chosen learners. Once this has been done, the course can be completed at any time you or your employees wish. Unlike many traditional courses, online ones can be stopped at any point, and picked up again when convenient.

All that is required is access to a desktop computer (note that online courses can generally be completed on a tablet or mobile device, but that the desktop experience is generally better) and an internet browser. You may go through various types of media, including videos, graphics and audio explanations, and then asked to complete various interactive tasks. Should you have any difficulties, support will usually be available, just as with any other type of training. Once the course requirements have been met, a certificate will be issued to show that you (or your employees) have completed the course and are familiar with the content within it. It’s then up to you to refresh your knowledge in future, though it is generally recommended that certificates are retaken every three years to maintain good first aid knowledge. Do be aware of course that there are different types of first aid course, that may work in different ways.

Are first aiders 'qualified' if they do an online first aid course?
First aid courses come in many different shapes and sizes. We have recently seen a huge increase in online first aid training being offered by providers - but are these courses suitable for your workplace, and does online first aid certification actually qualify you to act as a first aider?

In this blog, we break down the different types of training available, including online first aid courses, and explain how these meet the requirements set out in the Health and Safety (first-aid) regulations 1981 guidance.

First aid needs assessments
Before you can decide what sort of training you need, and if an online first aid course would suffice, you need to carry out a first aid needs assessment. This assessment takes a holistic look at your business and the associated risks, hazards and your workforce, to help determine the level of training you need, and the number of people who need it.

First aid training in the workplace: What are my options?
Your first aid needs assessment will look at the types of injuries and illnesses that first aiders will need to know about. Most commonly, employers will book their learners onto a First aid at Work course (FAW) or an Emergency first aid at work course (EFAW). These courses are outlined in the Health and Safety (first-aid) regulation guidance making them an easy off the shelf option for many as the qualifications are widely recognised and the syllabus is already decided for you.

You can however work with a training provider to develop something a little more bespoke to your needs, for instance, if you work with specific chemicals you may want specialised training included so first aiders know how to help someone if they come into contact with them.

Regardless of the training you choose, you need to make sure that any training given with the intention of it being used in the workplace, and counting towards your first aid provision, meets the requirements set out in the ‘Selecting a first aid training provider’ guide for employers, developed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Paediatric First aid
If you work in a childcare setting you may have additional first aid requirements depending on the age of the children you work with. The most common example of this can be seen in the Statutory Framework for Early Years Foundation stage, where the requirements for Paediatric first aid are outlined in more detail. In summary, whilst the syllabus differs, the framework requires you to follow the same criteria used for workplace first aid courses with regards to delivery and assessment.


Online first aid courses: Am I qualified?
All off the shelf first aid courses allow an aspect of blended learning, meaning that some aspects of the training can be delivered online. The Blended Learning in First Aid - Quality Assurance Standards, developed by the first aid quality partnership, is clear that the training duration should not be reduced regardless of any online element.

The table below set out the minimum Face-to-face training element for each of the core first aid courses used in the workplace:

In addition to this, the Selecting a first aid training provider guide for employers, sets out a list of additional due diligence checks that should be carried out on providers to ensure that any aspect of training for an online first aid course meets the needs of the HSE for use in the workplace.

The individual being trained must know how to use the technology that delivers the training and the training provider should be able to support the individual during their training;
The training provider must have a robust system in place to prevent identity fraud;
Sufficient time must be allocated for face-to-face training of practical elements of the syllabus, the HSE also strongly recommends that practical elements of the course should be assessed by direct observation. This practical aspect will also help build confidence and willingness to act as a first aider, as you can probably imagine, it would be really daunting to be expected to give CPR if you had never had a practice run e.g. had only completed an online first aid course.
The provider must have an appropriate means of assessing the e-learning component. It is important to remember that not all aspects of a course are suitable for online training and assessment and as a result first aid certification online is not possible without a face-to-face element for many courses.
Employers should also ensure they allow adequate time during the working day to undertake any first-aid training employees receive.

Online first aid certification - When can it be used for the workplace?
First aid certification online is not possible for First aid at work, Emergency first aid at Work or Paediatric first aid if the content was delivered exclusively online, as it would not meet the requirements set out in the guidance.

Where your first aid needs assessment identified a qualification other than a FAW or EFAW may be more suitable you should ensure that common elements of the syllabus are taught in accordance with the same guidelines.

For some workplaces, additional first aid training, specialist elements of first aid training or bespoke training may be able to be delivered exclusively online and first aid certification online may be appropriate. For example, if your first aid needs assessment identified a member of staff had a particular health concern, e.g. diabetes, and you wanted everybody to receive training so they would be able to help with this specific condition, you may be able to do an online course to cover this. However, you would need to be confident the nature of the content were appropriate to be delivered and assessed in this way.


First aid training for use at home
If you want to learn first aid for personal reasons, and don’t intend to use it in the workplace (or as part of an official role e.g. volunteering), then you may have more choice.

You do not need a first aid certificate to ‘qualify’ you in first aid for use with family and friends for instance, meaning both the range of courses and the delivery methods used are not regulated in the same way and the level of detail and complexity will likely be adjusted accordingly. For example you may not have the equipment available at home to bandage a cut that is bleeding heavily, so training may focus more on applying pressure with something you might have to hand such as a tea towel.

Whilst this gives a much wider choice of training, it is still important to make sure you use a reputable training provider and are happy that they have processes in place to keep the information they teach up to date and to ensure the training is effective.

First aid training online is now being offered by a wide range of training providers for this purpose. It is really important not to confuse first aid for use at home with first aid for use in the workplace as the requirements and regulations covering each differ dramatically.

So, whilst online first aid courses are definitely on the increase, they don’t replace the need for face to face training and assessment if you are learning first aid for use at work. Online first aid training can be a really useful tool for refreshing knowledge, providing training on specific elements or for getting some basic first aid skills for use at home but first aid certification online is not yet possible for the workplace.

Online Paediatric First Aid Courses
Paediatric First Aid courses for people working with children must meet Ofsted requirements and the criteria set out in Annex A of the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)document. Annex A of the EYFS documents requires:

‘The Emergency Paediatric First Aid course should be undertaken face-to-face and last for a minimum of 6 hours (excluding breaks)…’
‘Adequate resuscitation and other equipment including baby and junior models must be provided, so that all trainees are able to practice and demonstrate techniques.’
‘The full Paediatric First Aid course should last for a minimum of 12 hours…’

Online Paediatric First Aid courses can give an awareness of First Aid to parents and family members but can’t and do not qualify you to be a First Aider in your workplace.

If you are a parent and just need a basic understanding for your own curiosity before you attend a face to face course, you can check out an online Paediatric First Aid course on our website. However, an online awareness course is never going to replace face to face training where you learn, then practice First Aid skills whilst receiving ongoing constructive feedback and direction from a qualified, experienced trainer.

Employers
Employers are legally responsible for ensuring adequate First Aid provision is in place. They are legally required to complete due diligence on any First Aid training providers used and ensure any First Aid certificates people already hold are fit for purpose. If you are self employed – this duty falls on you. If you employ contractors – this duty falls on you. If your insurance provider requires you to have a First Aid certificate, it’s likely you won’t be insured. Online First Aid certificates are not acceptable and are not suitable.

Misleading claims by online First Aid providers
There are many online First Aid training courses that claim that they’re ‘recognised’ and suitable for workplaces including schools. As demonstrated above, they’re not.

These companies will happily take your money because they know they don’t have a duty to choose the right course – that’s your responsibility. These courses can offer an awareness of First Aid – but nothing more. Neither the HSE nor the DFE/Ofsted recognise these courses. You’ll have a nice certificate to display, but that’s it. You can’t be classed as a First Aider in any workplace.

Some courses can be taught partially by distance learning with the rest taught face to face. These courses are just as long as face to face courses, but some of the hours are spent sat in front of a computer instead of practicing practical First Aid skills and techniques.

What About the Top National Certifications?
However, none of the top certifications in the United States recognize 100% online training as a legitimate way of learning and becoming proficient in the physical skills involved with CPR and BLS. This includes the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, and the American Safety and Health Institute. While these organizations may offer blended learning training, none of them will certify someone based solely on the online portion of the training.

But tennis and swimming are terrible examples; no one’s life is at stake. CPR on the other hand demands that you are extremely knowledgable and proficient in a skill that has the potential to help save someone’s life. It is essential to have a coach, your CPR instructor, to guide you through the entire learning and certification process, especially the physical skill of performing high-quality CPR.

Our Experience
Unfortunately, we have had countless students come to us after taking one of these “online CPR certification” courses and tell us that their employer does not accept or recognize this type of training. Now they have to pay to retake the entire course with us and try to get a refund from the online provider. It’s very unfortunate.

And just to be clear. We see great value in all online learning, including health safety courses. It is very convenient and very cost-effective. Types
Some companies, like the CPR Prompt Home Learning System, offer a complete program you can use to learn CPR in the comfort of your own home. This includes a video course, a printed guide and a set of mannequins (adult and child). The mannequins are programmed to provide feedback on whether or not you are providing the right pressure on the right place, and the course also includes lots of accessories, such as illustrations and audio tips to help make the learning process easier. However, there is no official certification attached to this or any other home-only CPR program and you won't be recognized as certified by any major organization or body.

Warning
Companies that promise recognized, complete online CPR certification are basically scams. The regulating bodies for CPR certification, including the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross, do not recognize any online certification as legal. While studying at home can teach you the needed skills to perform CPR, you won't be able to use the certificate you obtain to enroll in any type of certification course that requires CPR certification, such as personal training, nursing, home health aide, etc.

Misconceptions
Many companies that advertise CPR certifications online are actually selling first aid courses. Because they don't focus exclusively on CPR, they are allowed by law to offer a certificate of completion, which is still not recognized by the certifying bodies mentioned above.
