eLearning for Healthcare - Accredited Healthcare E-Learning Courses

The UK Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) sets out 11 statutory and mandatory training topics for all staff working in health and social care settings. The CSTF includes nationally agreed learning outcomes and training delivery standards.

Does The Mandatory Training Group provide accredited healthcare e-learning courses?

The Mandatory Training Group's elearning for healthcare is one of the largest repositories of statutory and mandatory training courses in the UK. The Mandatory Training Group has worked with a range of subject matter experts to develop high quality, national e-learning training sessions, which address all the knowledge outcomes at level 1 and at level 2, where appropriate for eLearning.

Are the e-learning courses available for health and social care workers?

The sessions are freely available to all health and social care staff.

Can these online courses be used for Care Quality Commission compliance?

It is the responsibility of individual health and social care employer organisations to ensure that their workforce complete the appropriate training to comply with their statutory and mandatory requirements. It is also an employer’s responsibility to determine the best mode of delivering the training, whether that is face-to-face, elearning or a blended approach. The CSTF provides further guidance on this.

How are learners assessed for these eLearning courses?

The eAssessments within the session consist of two, randomly selected, multiple-choice questions per learning outcome. The eAssessments have an 80% pass rate and allow learners three attempts. If they fail, they are encouraged to review the knowledge chapters. As learners work through the eAssessment, they get feedback on both correct and incorrect answers.

Each session takes about 20 minutes to complete the knowledge chapters and approximately 10 minutes to complete the eAssessment. Please refer to the ‘Session Overview’ chapter for the estimated duration for each session.

All sessions can be accessed via mobiles and tablets.

5 Things You Need to Know About Mandatory Training

As a nurse, your safety as well as the safety and welfare of patients, partially depend on you. That is why getting all the right skills is crucial. The right knowledge will help you to deal with common situations that arise in the workplace.

If you want to kick start your nursing career, there is one term that you need to be familiar with—mandatory training. What do you need to know about mandatory training for nurses?

What is Mandatory Training?

This is the kind of training without which you cannot work in an organization. Mandatory training ensures that you can safely and effectively perform your duties in an organization. It includes training for record-keeping, conflict handling, consent, incident reporting, hand hygiene, and more.

Employer Obligations for Training

If you are employed, your employer can pay for your training which will count as a part of your work schedule. Whether or not your employer pays for your training will depend on the framework under which they are operating.

The NHS provides training to its employees to meet certain standards for better health, risk management, and quality care inspection.

Your employer may be obliged to provide training based on factors such as legal and country-specific obligations, the riskiness of the working environment, and the need for equality.

Mandatory Training Updates

Mandatory training for nurses should be and is updated regularly. In most cases, these updates are annual.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) does not dictate how often training should take place. Nevertheless, it requires nurses to have the latest skills. Your employer is free to set training schedules under which you should comply.

The Importance of Mandatory Training

Apart from ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and effective care for patients, mandatory training also helps to:

  • Create a work culture that encourages equality and better working relationships
  • Training also helps you feel more confident when you are performing your duties
  • Build professionalism, for example in training related to confidentiality.

Final Words

Whether you are joining the nursing profession or are already practising, mandatory training is crucial to effective performance at work. The training should be a continuous process, ensuring you keep up with the latest updates so that you can keep safe and perform your duties ethically and professionally at all times.

CSTF Aligned

With a highly mobile workforce, employers often need to identify recruits’ previous training. Where information is lacking, people can repeat training unnecessarily, wasting time and money. The UK CSTF addresses this issue. It allows employers to recognise statutory/mandatory training to a standard, trust that information and reduce duplication of training. Launched in 2013, the UK CSTF is maintained and updated by Skills for Health. Find out more here.

Many organisations have already declared their alignment to the UK CSTF. By sharing this information, employer organisations can recognise where training delivered in other organisations is in compliance with the UK CSTF and thereby help to prevent unnecessary duplication of training as staff move between roles and organisations. You can check if an employer/healthcare provider is aligned to the CSTF here.

Commercial Training Providers may also undergo CSTF verification, where Skills for Health has reviewed the learning offer and confirmed it is aligned to the learning outcomes defined in the UK CSTF.

CSTF Statutory and Mandatory Training Courses for Health & Social Care

The Skills Platform lists a wide range of mandatory training courses which are suitable for NHS workers such as nurses, doctors and dentists. Also addressed are the potential legal implications of immunisation and vaccination, including diligent record-keeping, and compliance with vaccination schedules.

Nurse Training

The responsibilities of nurses and midwives are extensive, so it is vital that they receive comprehensive training to fully prepare for their roles. In addition to the required knowledge of clinical procedures, patient safeguarding and infection control, nurses and midwives training must also cover the legislation surrounding staff responsibilities. Participants in the nurses and midwives elearning or classroom training programmes listed below will develop an understanding of the importance of patient confidentiality, as well as the accepted procedures for documentation, record keeping and conflict resolution. A comprehensive resource will also explain professional accountability, and demonstrate the role of ethics within the healthcare sector.

Safeguarding Training

Your staff have a duty of care to the individuals they work with, to preserve their safety, dignity, and general well-being. Safeguarding training for health highlights the many ways healthcare staff are required to take responsibility for people in their care, and offers guidance on how and when to intervene in order to protect them. Safeguarding adults (SOVA) and safeguarding children form a core part of the Care Certificate, corresponding to standards 10 and 11. Safeguarding also forms part of the Skills for Health core skills framework. All workers need to complete level 1, but depending on your role, some individuals may need to progress to safeguarding adults level two and safeguarding children levels two and three.

Such qualities can be beneficial in relationships but if exerted too often can lead to you losing respect and recognition for yourself and from your peers both in and outside of work. Assertiveness Training can help you learn strategies to assert your wants and needs to others in a firm but fair way, building your self-worth and self-efficacy as a result. Not being assertive can have maladaptive consequences for your mental health and self-esteem, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can help with this. For more insight on this, view our accredited CBT courses.

Core and mandatory training

We’ve developed guidance on refreshing knowledge and skills in a variety of topic areas based on a review of legislation, guidelines, statutory guidance, standards and recommendations. This was produced in partnership with a panel of social care employers, learning providers and representative organisations and was updated in line with CQC’s revised inspection framework.

Refreshing your learning

We’re frequently asked about how and when learning should be refreshed. It’s important that refreshing learning isn’t seen as a ‘tick box’ exercise to repeat or reconfirm prior learning. There are different reasons why a worker needs to refresh their learning which are explored here:

  • Introduction of new legislation or new best practice
  • Introduction of a new risk
  • Timeframes
  • Worker competency.
