Protecting children in entertainment: a course for chaperones - online course

Introductory courses for anyone working with children » Protecting children in entertainment: a course for chaperones - online course.

Interactive online course on how to protect children during rehearsals and productions
Are you a chaperone in the entertainment industry and want to better understand your role in protecting children and young people from abuse or harm?

Do you work in the professional or amateur entertainment industries and want to know more about the legal requirements that chaperones are required to follow?

As the UK’s experts on safeguarding, the NSPCC has produced a 60-minute elearning course, in association with the National Network for Children in Employment and Entertainment (NNCEE) and the BBC, covering the key statutory guidance that chaperones in the entertainment industry need to know.

What will I learn?
Children see the world through their incredible imaginations. This is especially true when they are taking part in an exciting activity, such as acting in a theatre production or being involved in a TV programme. But these exciting activities can be risky to children if they are not properly protected.

By the end of the course you will:

know the laws in each nation that underpin your responsibilities
understand how to recognise possible areas of concern
know how to respond to these concerns in the appropriate way
understand how to report any child protection concerns to those that are responsible for taking action
understand how to make a record of what you have seen and heard.
Benefits of the course
CPD certified.
Developed in partnership with the NNCEE and the BBC.
Regularly updated to reflect changes in legislation, guidance and best practice advice.

Who should take this course?
This course is for local authority-licensed chaperones. It can also be taken by those working in professional or amateur entertainment industries (for example, dance schools, amateur dramatics, choirs, television and film production companies, and professional theatres) who want to know more about a chaperone’s role and responsibilities, the statutory requirements and how best to protect children.

Note that this course supplements the training of chaperones and does not, in itself, confer accreditation.

Why take your training with the NSPCC?
At the NSPCC, we work to keep children and young people safe from abuse and neglect every day.

As the UK's experts on safeguarding and child protection, we understand the issues organisations and people working with children can face. That’s why professionals trust us to provide the support, training and resources they need to help protect the children and young people they work with.

Our highly-rated training courses are developed by experts. We work with a number of organisations, experienced consultants and subject matter experts in a range of sectors to develop courses that are clear, easy-to-use, up-to-date and in line with the latest statutory guidance, and tailored to your needs.

And as a charity, income generated from the sale of our online courses is reinvested back into the NSPCC to help protect children.

“The BBC is delighted to have worked in partnership with the NSPCC and NNCEE to develop this online safeguarding course which is designed to equip licensed chaperones with the required knowledge and skills to safeguard children working in entertainment, including within amateur dramatics and media productions.”
Caroline Brant, Head of Child Protection and Safeguarding at the BBC

“The NSPCC has produced an invaluable training programme for newly qualified amateur and professional chaperones alike that is easy to use and very clear and concise in its outlining what the legislation requires of all licensed chaperones. Its sections, questions and scenarios teach, embed or refresh your learning that will keep even long serving chaperones engaged.”
Sarah Lea, a professional chaperone who has completed the course
