Online Anaphylaxis Training Courses - e-Learning for Healthcare

This programme is in partnership with... HEE

Why is this training needed?

  • Clinical staff who give parenteral medications should have regular updates in dealing with anaphylactic reactions.
  • The Health Protection Agency recommends that staff who give immunisations should have annual updates in anaphylaxis.
  • Clinical staff should be familiar with the equipment and drugs they have available and should check them regularly.
  • Adrenaline must be readily available in clinical areas where anaphylaxis could occur.
  • The aim of the initial treatment is to keep the patient alive, and achieve some clinical improvement. This will buy time for further treatment and expert help.

This learning resource has been written to meet the needs of a wide variety of health care professionals such as health care support workers, registered practitioners and medical staff in both the community and hospital setting.

Expected learning outcomes

The learner will be able to:

  • Define anaphylaxis
  • Describe who is at risk of anaphylaxis
  • List four causes of anaphylaxis
  • Explain how to recognise and treat anaphylaxis
  • Describe the follow up that a patient will require

Pre schools and early years

A key message for any pre-school caring for children with allergies is to set up good lines of communication. All parents should be asked for information about allergies before their child starts pre-school. Then a management plan can be set up for each individual child with allergies, with their help of their parents and doctor. The BSACI has management plan templates available to download from its website.

The Anaphylaxis Campaign has produced a special fact sheet, “Guidance about Anaphylaxis for Carers of Pre-School Children attending Early-Years Settings.”  You can find this on Our Factsheets page in the “Anaphylaxis – General advice and information” section.

Our AllergyWise anaphylaxis online training course for parents and carers of pre-school children provides a sound understanding of the care and management of a very young severely allergic child.

Anaphylaxis First Aid Course - St John Ambulance

Anaphylaxis first aid course

Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) can kill without immediate first aid. The UK is one of the top countries in the world for incidence of allergies.

Allergies affect approximately one in three of the UK population and each year numbers grow by 5% with as many as half of those affected being children†.

Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction. Common causes are insect stings, foods and some medication. It is life threatening and requires immediate first aid (an auto-injector) and emergency medical assistance.

The likelihood is that someone in your school could have a severe allergy and this must form part of your first aid needs assessment. To find out more about anaphylaxis and the purchase, storage and use of adrenaline auto-injector devices in schools, check out our handy guide here, and keep your staff informed with our printable poster.

This course is approved by Allergy UK for anyone who needs training in how and when to use an auto-injector in the treatment of anaphylaxis.

Who should attend?

Those who provide childcare and workplace first aiders who have to deal with those prone to anaphylaxis should also attend.

What you will learn
