So, let's find out more about the framework and how it affects various healthcare providers.

About the UK Core Skills Training Framework

The Skills for Health (SfH) UK Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) was developed to provide a national standard for staff education and training that is widely recognised across the health sector by NHS England and NHS Employers. The CSTF is also recognised by  professional bodies such as the British Medical Association (BMA) and the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and regulators such as the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in England.

The Core Skills Training Framework was originally designed to cover the statutory and mandatory subjects that are essential for safety and compliance with the law. The CSTF was extended to include clinical and care subjects (the Clinical/Care Core Skills Training Framework).

Who is the CSTF statutory/mandatory training for?

The Skills for Health framework can be used by any healthcare employer in the UK, including primary care providers (clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), GP practices and private healthcare providers).

The CSTF framework provides the basis for an organisations’ training policy, especially those policies relating to statutory and mandatory training, for example manual handling, infection prevention and control, fire safety training and resuscitation. The framework clarifies what all healthcare providers need to be delivering, including the recommended training standards.

In addition to the e-learning courses for healthcare workers, we also provide additional web-based resources for those who register for our online statutory and mandatory training courses.

Using our interactive C.A.R.E LMS portal, line managers and compliance officers can track learner progress, download reports and certificates using the self-service group leader reporting tool. These web-based training records can be used during regulatory inspections to provide assurance to Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors that any required standards of training are being met (in line with the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014) with regards to mandatory training requirements under the CQC regulatory framework.

Is the Skills for Health CSTF suitable for primary care?

The Skills for Health's UK Core Skills Training Framework is suitable for all healthcare providers, including primary care organisations. In fact, many primary care organisations find the framework especially useful to ensure compliance with statutory and mandatory training requirements. Statutory training is the training that is required by law or to comply with mandatory requirements in organisations or sectors, such as the NHS.

Adopting the framework also makes statutory and mandatory training easily transferable. It allows healthcare and social care staff to move between different healthcare organisations with their training record intact and an assurance that common statutory/mandatory training standards are being met. This saves healthcare staff and organisations from wasting time and money in repeating mandatory and statutory training unnecessarily.

Declaration of alignment to the CSTF

Healthcare providers who have mapped their in-house statutory and mandatory training to the Core Skills Training Framweork are eligible to submit a Declaration of Alignment (to the CSTF)), confirming which of their training programmes are aligned to the framework subjects.
