What is Sepsis Training?

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) reported that 70% of sepsis cases develop within primary care settings. Sepsis is not a thing to be taken lightly because it can lead to death without the proper intervention and treatment.

This blog will discuss sepsis and sepsis training alongside its importance.

What is sepsis?

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency resulting from the body’s extreme response to an infection. Sepsis happens when an infection you already have triggered a chain reaction throughout your body. Infections that lead to sepsis often start in the lung, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract. It may progress to septic shock, a dramatic drop in blood pressure that can lead to severe organ problems and death.

Sepsis occurs in people who are hospitalised or who have recently been hospitalised. People in intensive care units are more likely to develop infections that can lead to sepsis. See your doctor about an infection or wound that hasn't responded to treatment.

What is sepsis training?

Sepsis training addresses the high-risk areas for the early identification and management of sepsis. It aims to improve healthcare professionals’ awareness of, diagnosis and management of patients with sepsis.

Sepsis training helps healthcare professionals to spot the early signs of sepsis, provide timely treatment and ultimately save lives. The programme is suitable for a wide range of healthcare professionals globally, including general practitioners, hospital doctors, nurses, community midwives and paramedics.

Who needs sepsis training?

The sepsis training course was developed for frontline healthcare professionals, including:

  • Doctors
  • Dentists
  • General practitioners
  • Pre-hospital workers
  • Allied health professionals (AHPs)
  • Registered nurses and midwives
  • Health and social care support workers.

What do sepsis training courses include?

The training includes the general principles for the safe assessment of a sick child, the consultation and assessment components, and specific factors to be considered in primary and secondary care settings. These also include the following:

  • Statistics and critical facts about sepsis
  • Relevant legislation and regulatory framework
  • What is sepsis, who is at risk and how to spot sepsis
  • Septic shock
  • Diagnosis and treatment of sepsis
  • Initial management of sepsis
  • Emergency treatment
  • Recovering from sepsis.

Is sepsis training mandatory?

Until now, there has been no strategic view around sepsis training for healthcare staff in England, and training in sepsis does not form part of mandatory statutory training for healthcare staff. Although many resources are available to assist with sepsis training, for example, those developed by the UK Sepsis Trust, there has been no clear direction regarding what training is required, how it should be delivered, and to whom.

As a result, there is significant variation in the training provided to different groups of healthcare staff and across different healthcare settings.
