What is Safeguarding Training?

Safeguarding promotes the children's and vulnerable adults' welfare and protects them from harm. It enables them to live safely, where all their needs are met with no risk of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.

This blog will discuss what is safeguarding training, who needs it, what it covers and how often is this training valid.

What is safeguarding?

The Care Act statutory guidance defines adult safeguarding as: “Protecting an adult’s right to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect.

 It is about people and organisations working together to prevent and stop the risks and experience of abuse or neglect, at the same time making sure that the adult’s wellbeing is promoted, including, where appropriate, having regard to their views, wishes, feelings and beliefs in deciding on any action.

 This must recognise that adults sometimes have complex interpersonal relationships and may be ambivalent, unclear or unrealistic about their circumstances.”

So safeguarding is for people who, because of issues such as dementia, learning disability, mental ill-health or substance abuse, have care and support needs that may make them more vulnerable to abuse or neglect.

Who needs safeguarding training?

Each person who works or has direct contact with children, young people, adults at risk, and/or their families and carers should take and pass a safeguarding training course.

The safeguarding training course should be completed by all practitioners who have regular contact with patients, their families or carers, or the public who works in health and social care services, including:

  • NHS medical, nursing, AHP and care staff
  • Locum doctors and nurses
  • Locum allied health professionals (AHPs)
  • General practitioners and GP locum staff
  • Social workers and social care support workers
  • Agency nurses and workers
  • Healthcare assistants
  • Support workers
  • Care assistants
  • Community services.

All healthcare and social care staff should complete the safeguarding training, including voluntary and unpaid workers in NHS and private hospitals. This training is also relevant for health and social care support workers, including those who work for nursing care homes, residential care homes and charities.

Is safeguarding training a legal requirement?

Safeguarding training is a legal requirement for everyone who works in close contact with children and/or vulnerable adults in the United Kingdom. These are legislations relating to safeguarding:

  • The Care Act 2014 - The Care Act 2014 places a general duty on local authorities to promote the well-being of individuals when carrying out care and support functions. Safeguarding adults comes under the Care Act 2014.
  • Sexual Offences Act 2003 - The Sexual Offences Act (SOA) 2003 modernised the law by prohibiting any sexual activity between a care worker and a person with a mental disorder while the care relationship continues.
  • Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 and the Protection of Freedoms Bill - Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (SVGA) 2006 was passed to help avoid harm, or risk of harm, by preventing people deemed unsuitable to work with children and vulnerable adults from gaining access to them through their work.
  • Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 - The law offers protection from victimisation to people who blow the whistle under the Public Interest Disclosure Act (PIDA) 1998. The parameters of ‘protected disclosure’ are set out in the Employment Rights Act (ERA) 1996. The person making the disclosure should not commit an offence (e.g. breach of the Official Secrets Act 1989).

What do safeguarding training courses include?

Safeguarding training will teach you the signs and indicators of abuse and neglect, the different forms of abuse and the laws relevant to your profession.

A safeguarding training course also covers the following:

  • How to support vulnerable people
  • How to respond to safeguarding alerts
  • The legislation surrounding safeguarding adults
  • Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
  • Understand the purpose of report writing
  • How to plan an adult protection investigation
  • How to use systems and standards to prevent and respond to neglect and abuse.

How long is safeguarding training valid for?

Safeguarding training is likely essential if you work or volunteer with children or vulnerable adults or come into close contact with them. It is recommended that safeguarding training is updated every two years.

Ultimately, your employer will decide how often you must take safeguarding training. The expiry date listed on your safeguarding training certificate will tell you when your training is valid until. Your safeguarding certificate will have a different validity period depending on the safeguarding course you have taken and sometimes even the depth of training required in your role.

Some safeguarding certificates may be valid for a different time (e.g., one year), so you must take a refresher course before your certificate expires.
