What is fire safety awareness training?

Since the fire safety Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the provision of fire training has become a legal requirement for all employees within the UK.

Healthcare is provided in a wide range of environments, and it is essential that, depending upon the nature of the environment, the relevant guidance related to fire safety management is used to help assess and address potential fire safety risks.

Fire safety awareness can be defined as management activities undertaken to prevent fires, the controls that manage fire systems in emergencies and the event of an uncontrolled fire, and the fire safety training suppression methods used to extinguish it.

Who needs fire safety awareness training?

Fire safety training is a legal requirement for all staff. Adequate fire safety information and instruction are required for all staff on induction.

It is a legal requirement that all employees undergo basic training at induction, and refresher training should be given at regular intervals. What does fire safety training include?

  • The characteristics of fire, smoke and toxic fumes
  • The fire hazards in the working environment
  • Significant findings of relevant fire risk assessments
  • How to practice and promote fire prevention
  • Basic fire safety and local fire safety protocols, including staff responsibilities during a fire incident
  • The means of raising the fire alarm and the actions to take on hearing the fire alarm
  • The right action to take if a fire breaks out or smoke is detected
  • The different types of fire extinguishers, their use and the safety precautions associated with their use
  • The importance of being familiar with evacuation procedures and associated escape routes.

In addition, learners should participate in practical training sessions which include evacuation techniques and, where appropriate, firefighting equipment. Depending upon the role, location and service needed, the learning outcomes must be supplemented by specific job and site training.

How often should you do fire awareness training?

On commencement of employment, all staff should receive local site-specific fire induction training and undertake any established local corporate fire induction training within a month of starting employment. All staff should receive regular updated fire safety training and instruction. Staff involved in the direct care of patients, who may need to help evacuate others, should receive training more frequently than those who may only be required to evacuate themselves. This needs to be based on current local risk assessment.

Refresher training will be indicated if there has been a national change in Fire Safety Legislation, an organisation has amended its policy, or the local fire risk assessment identifies a new or changed risk. All staff affected will need to be updated to reflect any changes.
