World Mental Health Day 2023: A universal right to well-being
Dr Richard Dune
10-10-2023

Every year on October 10th, the global community comes together to shine a light on a topic often shrouded in silence: mental health. World Mental Health Day 2023 isn’t just a day of reflection; it’s a call to action. This year's theme is clear: 'Mental health is a universal human right'.
The universality of mental health

You, me, our neighbours, the barista who serves us coffee every morning, the bus driver, the CEO, the intern; we all have one thing in common: mental health. It’s as much a part of us as our physical health. Yet, even in the modern age, the subject is met with whispers, if at all.
Today, we loudly and proudly declare: “It’s okay to talk about mental health and even more okay to seek help.” The Mental Health Foundation is leading the charge. Addressing inequalities in mental health services ensures that good mental health is not a privilege but a right for everyone.
Tea, Talk and Transform

Imagine 260,000 people across the UK sitting down, sipping their tea, and breaking the barrier around mental health conversations. That’s exactly what’s happening through the 'Tea & Talk' initiative.
Over 7,000 events have sprouted nationwide, turning ordinary tea sessions into extraordinary platforms for change. Each chat, each sip, is a step towards a society where everyone’s mental well-being is acknowledged and nurtured.
Why the urgency?

One may ask, “Why is this so important?”. Here's the stark reality:
- Children and adults in the lowest income brackets are 2-3 times more likely to develop mental health issues than the highest.
- 38% of people with severe mental health symptoms also juggle long-term physical conditions.
- Asylum seekers are 5 times more likely to have mental health needs than the general populace.
These aren't just numbers; they represent lives, hopes, and dreams. The glaring inequalities necessitate urgent action. Mental health disparities cannot and should not be the norm.
A ripple effect of change

Beyond Tea & Talk, a movement occurs online and offline. Whether proudly wearing a green ribbon, engaging in robust social media conversations, or directly supporting affected individuals, every action creates ripples.
Sharing a story or even a simple photo, like on the @mentalhealthfoundation Instagram page, can be the lifeline someone needs. It's a gesture that says, “You’re not alone. We’re in this together.”
Speaking up and reaching out

Starting a conversation about mental health, whether your own or inquiring about someone else's, can be daunting. But remember, talking is therapeutic. Here's a brief guide:
If you’re opening up:
- Choose a confidante, be it a loved one or even a helpline.
- Find a comfortable place to converse. Sometimes, even a walk can be therapeutic.
- Be prepared for varied reactions, and arm yourself with patience and information.
If you’re reaching out:
- Ensure a distraction-free space for the conversation.
- Listen more than you speak. Sometimes, all one needs is a patient ear.
- Offer help, but let them guide the process. Their journey, their pace.
The next steps

Awareness is the starting point; action must follow. For anyone struggling, remember, you’re not alone. From GPs to helplines and community groups, avenues are waiting to assist. Embrace them.
For those fortunate to enjoy good mental health, take a moment to educate, support, and engage. Every gesture, however small, contributes to a world where mental health is not a privilege for a few but a universal right for all.
In the spirit of World Mental Health Day 2023, let’s stand united in ensuring everyone has access to the care, understanding, and support they deserve because mental health is a universal human right.
Conclusion: Uniting for a brighter tomorrow

Our mental well-being remains a cornerstone of our holistic health in a constantly evolving world and presents new challenges. As we commemorate World Mental Health Day 2023, it's not just about the campaigns, the discussions, or the statistics. It's about humanity's collective resilience and commitment to ensuring everyone, irrespective of their background or circumstances, can live in a space where their mental health is valued, understood, and nurtured.
By coming together, breaking the barriers, and fostering open conversations, we're not just changing narratives but transforming lives. Let's continue this journey with compassion, understanding, and the unwavering belief that a brighter, mentally healthier future is within our grasp.
