Unmasking Malnutrition: Join the UK Malnutrition Awareness Week 2023

In a world where the spotlight often lands on global hunger crises, it's easy to forget that malnutrition isn't just a problem reserved for distant shores. It exists, sometimes silently, in our very own backyards.

From 6th to 12th November 2023, the UK Malnutrition Awareness Week (#UKMAW2023) seeks to pull back the curtain on this issue, revealing its profound impact on our communities, especially among older people.

The Malnutrition Task Force (MTF) and BAPEN are again joining for #UKMAW2023. While the MTF hones in on the plight of older individuals, BAPEN casts its lens on disease-related malnutrition. These two perspectives provide a comprehensive overview of malnutrition's vast expanse.

Why this matters

Simply put, malnutrition is debilitating. It affects the body and the mind, leading to many health issues, increased hospital stays, and a decreased quality of life. Most alarmingly, it often goes unnoticed until it's too late.

Think of your grandparents, neighbours, or even the older woman you pass by every morning on your commute. They might seem fine on the surface, but dig a little deeper, and the cracks begin to show. The loose-fitting clothes, the declining energy levels, or even the empty refrigerator could all be tell-tale signs.

Monday, 6th November: Dive into the Learning Event, be part of BAPEN's MAG National Screening Survey, and remember to nominate your nutrition superheroes. These individuals are champions in the fight against malnutrition, and their efforts deserve to be showcased.

  • Interactive Tuesday - Share your story. What have you observed? What solutions have you discovered? Use #UKMAW2023 and join a community committed to positive change.
  • Access to good nutrition Wednesday - From Meals on Wheels to home delivery food services, it's a day to celebrate those entities, ensuring everyone has access to nutritious meals.
  • Thirsty Thursday - Hydration is just as crucial. Brainstorm and share creative ways to ensure everyone gets their daily water intake.
  • Robust and resilient Friday - Prepare for winter, know where to get your vaccines, and arm yourself with knowledge and resources to remain healthy.
  • Social media weekend - Cap off the week by celebrating those superheroes in nutrition. The individuals and organisations who go above and beyond every day deserve applause.

What can you do?

The mantra for #UKMAW2023 is 'Ask, Look, Listen'. It's a simple yet powerful call to action.

Ask about appetites and daily struggles.

Look for signs of weight loss or difficulties in daily activities.

Listen to their concerns, fears, and hopes. Often, these conversations can lead to early interventions, ensuring individuals get the support they need.

A movement born out of need

UKMAW was initiated in 2018 by the combined forces of MTF and BAPEN. It has grown exponentially, shining a light on malnutrition in various sectors. Born in 2012, the Malnutrition Task Force aims to mitigate preventable malnutrition in older people. Their tireless efforts have sparked conversations, leading to tangible change in communities.

As we approach #UKMAW2023, it's a call to arms for every individual. You don't need to be a health professional or a nutrition expert. All it takes is a keen eye, an open heart, and a commitment to making a difference.

Remember, malnutrition is preventable. It begins with awareness, followed by action. Let's make this year's UK Malnutrition Awareness Week a milestone towards a nourished and thriving community.

Stay updated. Engage in the conversations. Be part of the change.
