What is Mental Health First Aid Training?

Mental health awareness is one of the most pressing issues the healthcare industry faces and has always been a taboo topic. Fighting the stigma and providing support and resources to struggling individuals and their loved ones are some of the integral parts of mental health awareness. This blog will discuss the importance of mental health, what mental health first aid training is and where can we train for mental health first aid.

Why is mental health important?

Mental health is a vital part of our well-being. And this determines how an individual operates psychologically, emotionally, and socially.

When considering the role of your mental health, it is vital to take care of and improve psychological wellness. Maintaining healthy mental health and treating mental health conditions is essential to stabilising behaviours, emotions, and thoughts. Focusing on mental health care can increase productivity, enhance our self-image, and improve relationships.

Who needs mental health first aid training courses?

Mental health first aid training courses are appropriate for anyone age 18 and older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health-related crisis or problem. This qualification is suitable for learners who wish to raise awareness of mental health, create a culture of care and the promotion of positive mental health or anyone with an interest in developing their knowledge and understanding of how to deal with a mental health crisis or emergency, in general, or in specific situations. It allows learners to understand mental health, its associated care, and how can this be applied to learners or colleagues in the workplace.

What is mental health first aid training?

Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. It is a training program that teaches public members how to help a person who develops a mental health problem (including a substance misuse problem) and is experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.

Like traditional first aid, mental health first aid does not teach people to treat or diagnose mental health or substance use conditions. Instead, the training teaches people how to offer initial support until appropriate professional help is received or until the crisis resolves.
