Should First Aid Training be Refreshed Annually?
First aid training is vital for teachers and health and social care workers. It is up to you to act in an emergency when you have vulnerable people in your care. When is the best time to refresh your skills?
This blog will discuss the importance of first aid and how often should you renew your first aid training.
Should first aid training be refreshed annually?
Meeting the requirements for first aid training sounds simple. Ensure you have enough tools, such as first aid kits, and have enough people who know the first aid job is done. And you just need to repeat the process every three years.
The HSE recommends that first-aiders undertake annual refresher training, over half a day, during any three-year certification period. Although not mandatory, this will help qualified first-aiders maintain their basic skills and keep up to date with any changes to first-aid procedures.
Why do first aiders need refresher training?
Proper first aid training is essential for employees and employers, as providing basic first aid can help save a life in an emergency. However, not keeping up with renewing and recertifying first aid training may prevent you from helping others to the best of your ability.
Health care professionals must refresh their skills and always be prepared to do the right thing. EFR first aid and CPR refresher courses are designed so you'll quickly move through the skills you remember and spend more time on things you may have forgotten.
Is refresher training legally required?
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recognises two types of first aid training:
- Emergency First Aid at Work
- First Aid at Work.
Both of these certificates last for three years. There is no explicit legal requirement that either type of training is refreshed. However, employers are legally bound to ensure first aiders remain competent with adequate skills to address the first aid needs of the working environment. As mentioned above, the HSE recommends refresher courses are taken at least annually.
What are the changes in first aid practices?
The Coronavirus pandemic made it clear how essential it is to stay up-to-date with the latest facts and information. For instance, when the virus began, many had no idea whether it was still okay to administer first aid when doing so would put them at risk of transmission.
Fortunately, first aid training bodies and the government have developed clear guidelines for handling these situations. Your first aiders must have this knowledge and be aware of any other changes to administering first aid.
How to renew the first-aid certificate?
How long a first-aid certificate lasts depends on the qualification. It'll be every three years if you hold a certificate for a regulated first aid course. Once that date has gone, you can't be the first aider until you've completed your renewal. For other courses, the validity is shorter (between 1 and 1.5 years).
Of course, validity is only part of the story - if you're not confident in your skills because you trained two years ago and haven't used them, it's worth considering a skills refresher or a renewal.
